After being dominated and subjugated for years thanks to patriarchy, women are now breaking the glass ceiling in every field of work–whether it is sports or cinema. The latest and most inspirational of them all is Sanna Martin, a 34-year-old, who has been elected as Finland’s Prime Minister.
Never Thought About My Age: Marin
At 34, Sanna Marin is one youngest state leaders in the world, ahead of Ukraine’s 35-year-old Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk. Marin, the former transport minister of Finland, is a member of the Social Democrats and was elected on Sunday. That makes her the youngest head of government in the history of not just the country but also the world.
Sanna Marin, however, won by a close margin. Finland’s ruling Social Democratic Party council voted 32-29 in favour of Marin, replacing the outgoing leader, Antti Lindtman. The latter had already submitted his resignation on December 3.
Marin, on the other hand, has amazed the entire world by scripting history and she seems completely confident about taking over the responsibilities that are being mounted on her shoulders. “We have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust,” Marin told reporters after winning majority votes. She deflected questions about her age and said, “I have never thought about my age or gender, I think of the reasons I got into politics and those things for which we have won the trust of the electorate.” More power to you, Sanna!
Other Countries, Please Take Notes!
Not just Social Democrats, but there are four other parties in Finland’s coalition government that are led by women. While the Left Alliance is led by Li Anderson who is a 32-year-old; the Green League is led by Maria Ohisalo who also happens to be 34. The Centre Party is led by Katri Kulmuni, 32, while Anna-Maja Henriksson, who is 55 years old, is heading the Swedish People’s party. Isn’t that inspirational?

World’s Youngest State Leaders
According to Finland’s biggest newspaper, Marin is all set to become the world’s youngest sitting prime minister. Ukraine, North Korea and New Zealand’s Prime Ministers are others in the queue. Jacinda Ardern (New Zealand PM) is 39, and the PM of Ukraine, Oleksiy Honcharuk, is 35.
India, please take notes from Finland and let women politicians lead parties. The only woman leading a party in India is Mayawati, a 63-year-old who is the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo.
