Remember how cricket fever was at an all-time high in the 2000s? It was an obsession and every time India scored a win, it would culminate into a big fat celebration. It didn’t feel like a team’s win. It was like we had all won and we feel exactly like that today. The reason is Indian weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu. Last night, the world champion sent waves across the country after clinching a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
Chanu dominated the 49kg category and defended her Commonwealth Games Champion title while giving India its first gold of the Birmingham edition. It is her second consecutive gold medal after the 2018 edition of the CGWs held in Gold Coast, Australia and we are ecstatic.
Chanu Sets A New World Record At Commonwealth Games 2022
The Indian Olympic silver medalist amassed a total of 201kg (88kg + 113kg) to dominate the competition and won gold while making a new record in the CWG. The silver medal was awarded to Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritius who aggregated a total of 172kg. And the bronze went to Canada’s Hannah Kaminski who summed up a total of 171 kg. Chanu beat Ranaivosoa by a huge margin by lifting a whopping 29kg more than her and thus ended up setting a new world record.

Previously, Chanu had entered the Commonwealth Games in 2014, Glasgow, where she bagged the silver medal at the age of 19. The next was CGW 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, where she first won gold by securing her win with a total lift of 196kg. This time around, she has shattered her own record at CGW proving that she’s only getting better and better. Chanu’s personal best of 119kg in clean and jerk is currently the world record and we, as a country, are so proud of her.
We all had goosebumps as we watched her lift to victory last night. And it was even more thrilling to see her flash the most joyous smile as she accepted the gold at the medal ceremony in Birmingham on Saturday. Mirabai Chanu is truly an unstoppable force and we can’t wait to see what she does next.
