Indian Boxer Mary Kom Has Been Named ‘Asia’s Best Woman Athlete’ & We Are SO Proud!

Mary Kom (Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte), the 36-year-old Olympic medallist, six-time World Champion and a mother of three, is one of the most decorated Indian sportspersons. She has been dominating headlines since 2012 when she became the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the Summer Olympics. And she isn’t done yet. Mary Kom has now been named the Best Woman Athlete in Asia by the Asian Sportswriters Union (AIPS Asia).

“Olympian Boxer & mother of 3 boys. Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Arjuna, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shri, Padma Bhusan Awardee. 2012 London Olympic 🥉Medalist,” looks like Mary Kom has another feather to add to her Twitter bio.

She is the only woman to have won a medal in each one of the seven world championships. Recently, Mary Kom brought home gold at the 23rd President’s Cup which was held in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Last year at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she became the first Indian woman to have won a gold medal in boxing at the Games.

Recently, Indian badminton players PV Sindhu and Manasi Joshi were in the news for winning their respective championships and making India proud. While Sindhu became the first Indian (first Indian, not the first Indian woman) to win a gold at the BWF World Championships, para-athlete Joshi won her first BWF Para World Badminton Championship.

Another wonderful news came in yesterday when Elavenil Valarivan brought home gold at the ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) World Cup in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Hailing from Tamil Nadu, the 20-year-old won her first gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle category.

Indian sprinter VK Vismaya claimed the gold medal too at the International Athletic Meeting in Brno, Czech Republic. The 22-year-old came first in the 400m race giving her personal best timing of 52.12 seconds.
