9 Best Natural Hair Colours For Kids To Enjoy

Whether it’s out of curiosity, for fun, or just out of plain boredom, dyeing your kid’s hair can be a fun way to experiment with their look and style. But there’s just one hurdle that could keep you from allowing your child to dye their hair—the long list of potentially harsh ingredients, such as ammonia, parabens, and sulphates mentioned at the back of the hair colour bottle. These chemicals are present in most store-bought hair colours and can harm your child’s scalp and also damage their tresses, causing dryness and frizz.

But this doesn’t mean you ban your child from colouring their hair in fun colours. All you have to do is sidestep the bad stuff and switch to natural hair colours. And the good news is that there are plenty of natural substitutes for hair colour for kids that can help give your child’s hair a different hue and elevate their appearance.

The 9 Best Natural Hair Colour For Kids

Natural hair colours for kids, such as beet juice, coffee, and chamomile provide a light stain on your child’s hair

Beet Juice

Beet juice has excellent staining potential and offers a great natural dye for a light pink wash of colour. Simply mix beet juice with a carrier oil, and apply the mixture to your child’s strands. Make sure to wrap their hair with a shower cap and wait for a few hours. Once the mixture has settled in your child’s hair for a few hours, rinse it out with a chemical-free shampoo, and admire your little one’s new temporary hair colour.

Coffee

A strong cup of roasted coffee works wonders in giving your child’s hair a darker shade. The only problem is that this natural dye isn’t that long-lasting and may come out after 1-2 shampoos.

Once you have brewed the coffee, add a spoonful or two of coffee grounds into the mixture and coat your child’s hair. Let the mixture sit for at least an hour, and then rinse it out with a plant-based shampoo to reveal darker and smooth strands that make your child look like a superstar.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a potent hair dye ingredient that lightens the hair and enhances scalp health

Cinnamon is another natural hair colour ingredient with excellent lightening properties. For colouring your child’s hair with cinnamon, you will need a plant-based conditioner and 2-3 spoonfuls of cinnamon powder. Mix the ingredients well, and apply the paste to your child’s hair. Let it sit for a minimum of four hours and then rinse to reveal the new hair colour. You can also try putting a shower cap on your child’s head, and let the solution sit overnight for best results.

The only thing that you need to know about this method is that it may take repeated uses for noticeable results. But don’t worry, because as a bonus it helps enhance your child’s scalp health, and also leaves their hair smelling amazing.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a tried-and-tested hair dye and is great for highlighting your child’s locks. For this method, all you need is some lemon juice and the sun to get the perfect chemical reaction of alkaline (heat and sunshine) and acid (lemon juice) to reveal those stained highlights.

Squeeze lemon juice into a spray bottle and directly spray the juice onto the areas where your child wants highlights. Then, send your child out into the sun, rough, we know, but this is how the method works. In fact, the more time your child spends under the sun, the more noticeable the colour will get. Remember to put a thick layer of SPF on your child’s face and body before sending them out.

You may have to repeat this process quite a few times to achieve noticeable results. Also, note that lemon can sometimes dry the hair out, so make sure to add some kind of oil into the mixture, such as almond, olive, or coconut oil to keep your child’s hair nourished and conditioned.

Chalk

Chalk serves as one of the best temporary hair colour for kids. Due to its opacity, chalk typically shows up on every hair colour, and also lasts about 2-4 shampoos. For this method, simply wet your child’s hair and separate them into sections. Then, run chalk (let your kid choose a colour of their choice first) over their hair strands to reveal a funky new colour.

Chamomile

Chamomile is also a natural hair lightener and can be applied to your child’s hair using a spray bottle. Begin by brewing a batch of chamomile tea, and make sure to cool it completely before pouring the tea into a spray bottle. After a strand test, apply the mixture to the sections of hair your child wants to highlight. Let their solution sit in their hair, and take them to soak under the sun. And voila! After a few hours, new highlights await.

Coloured Hair Gels

You can also opt for natural coloured hair gels to give your child a makeover. These hair gels are available in plenty of colours, and your child can add a different dash of hue to different sections of their hair. Coloured hair gels can also be used to style their hair on a daily basis, and you can take them out by rinsing their hair on the same night. Plus, these gels are way better than coloured hair sprays, which often leave the hair crunchy and dry.

Natural Food Colouring

Yes, you can use natural food colouring to dye your child’s streaks. Just add 3-4 spoonfuls of a food colouring of your choice with water and a spoonful of vinegar, and add the mixture to your child’s strands. Let the solution sit for a couple of hours to reveal amazingly coloured and stylish streaks.

Honey

This may sound like a sticky affair, but raw honey is claimed to be one of the most effective methods of naturally lightening hair. Also, honey is a natural treatment for dandruff, it’s great for your child’s hair too. To begin, add honey to a plant-based conditioner, and apply the mixture to your child’s hair. Let the mixture sit for at least 3-4 hours before rinsing it out thoroughly, and bam! New hair colour for your kid.

Using natural hair colour for kids is a great way to give them a makeover while keeping their strands and scalp protected. The ingredients that we have mentioned above are all-natural but don’t forget to conduct a strand test before applying them. This will help determine if your child is allergic to any of the ingredients and prevent the risk of further hair damage or infections.
