Dear Kangana, Blaming Women For Crimes Men Commit Is Problematic AF

Actor Kangana Ranaut seems to be at the helm of controversy wherever she goes. Whether it is slamming another actor or picking up a fight with a journalist, the Queen knows how to stir the pot. This obviously didn’t change at the Panga press conference in Mumbai.

A few days ago, senior lawyer, Indira Jaising took to Twitter and wrote, “While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn’t want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against the death penalty.”

Kangana Ranaut was asked about her thoughts on what senior lawyer Indira Jaising said, urging Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi to pardon the convicts on death row for the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder case. To this Kangana replied, “That lady (Jaising) should be kept in jail with those convicts for four days. She needs it. Women like them give birth to these kind of monsters and murderers. It’s women like these who sympathise with such murderers.”

Kangana strongly voted in favour of death penalty for the rapists. She further claimed that Indira never met Nirbhaya’s parents to ask them about what their situation was. The actor also accused Indira of failing to stand by victims and alleged that because of people like her who make a living by supporting rapists, victims fail to get justice in this country.

Even Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, commented on Jaising’s request, saying, “Who is Indira Jaising to give me such a suggestion? The whole country wants the convicts to be executed. Just because of people like her, justice is not done with rape victims.”

She supported Kangana’s statements, adding, “I agree with Kangana Ranaut’s statement. I am glad she has reacted to this disgusting remark by Indira Jaising. I am a mother and all I want is justice for my daughter who passed away 7 years back. People like Indira Jaising run ‘human rights’ business and only support the culprits.”

Twitter Is Divided Over Kangana’s Statement

While I do feel that it was insensitive of the lawyer to ask for pardon from Nirbhaya’s parents for a heinous crime that shook the country, she wasn’t asking for them to spare their life or wasn’t taking the criminals’ side. She was just talking against the death penalty.

Now, why I find Kangana’s statement problematic is because she is criticising a woman who dedicated her life to advocating for human rights. And the woman is asking for correctional remedies and state intervention to be adopted for these violent crimes, instead of putting them on death row.

Also, the men who committed this crime, committed it on their own. Blaming women for this is taking internalised misogyny to another level. Even the director of the film, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, who is known for putting women at the forefront of her films, didn’t stop the actor and instead was just sitting silently.

Celebrities need to understand the amount of clout they hold and the amount of minds they can influence, this is a huge burden that they hold. Making statements without understanding the entire situation can be very scary.
