“I’m 20 minutes into Bly Manor, and uh... Owen!”
“In love with Owen Sharma!”
This is legit what most of the tweets about Netflix’s new show The Haunting Of Bly Manor sound like. Well, little would have actor Rahul Kohli anticipated the kind of love and fandom the show would earn him when he first signed up for it. Oh, also, don’t even get us started on the thirst tweets that have been written in the name of this charming actor who plays Owen Sharma, the incredibly sweet and endearingly goofy chef in the much-talked-about horror drama.
The internet is currently going all gaga about Owen’s character in the show, his incredible mustaches, and, of course, his penchant for all things puns. That said, it is always an exciting deal for the Indian audience when desi origin actors leave their mark on the global audience. That’s the case with the current Owen phenomenon as well. In fact, so rave has been the response to this charming character that we were made to think about all the times an Indian origin actor made it big on the international turf. Here are our seven favourite picks:
You cannot introduce yourself as a web show buff and say that you don’t know Mindy Kaling, THE Mindy Kaling. That’s just not allowed because such is the mark that this extremely talented woman has left on the global audience. And speaking of her artistic oeuvre, be it The Office, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Grey’s Anatomy, Sesame Street, and of course the eponymous The Mindy Project, this one has seriously done it all.
Just earlier this year, the coming of age show, Never Have I Ever took over the web-series fanatics. But then again, you don’t expect anything less when Mindy Kaling’s genius is associated with a series, right? So yeah, long things short, the series really did blow us, it’s second season is currently into making, and as much as we loved the protagonist Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, it is her “good” cousin Devi Kamala that we really had our eyes on. She has earlier been seen on a number of films and web-shows including The Mindy Project.
However, it was her miss goody two shoe portrayal of Kamala that made us really proud. Kamala in the show is forever haunted by her clean and proper Indian girl image who is expected to get married as soon as possible while she wants to chase her professional goals and romantic adventures. That said, here is a character that's intelligent, kind, and desired by so many. Amid a slew of Asian caricatures, this is exactly the Indian portraiture that we look forward to.
It was with his portrayal of Rajesh Koothrappali in The Big Bang Theory that Kunal Nayyar made it big as an actor. He really did leave a lasting impression while playing the Indian character who is intelligent enough to earn a Ph.D. but awkward enough to go absolutely mute when confronted by women. The iconic show recently came to a wrap with its 12th season but is sure to remain an iconic one for years to come. We look forward to all the awesome things that Kunal plans to do next.
Kalpen Suresh Modi or Kal Penn, as he is more popularly known, has a persona that instantly lights up the skin. He easily dominates every single frame that he appears in, making it impossible for the viewers to leave him unnoticed even in the briefest of the roles.
That said, the actor in fact boasts of a really illustrious career, has done a plethora of movies including The Namesake where he played the lead character. Speaking of TV shows and web-series, the actor has been seen in a lot of them including memorable performances in How I Met Your Mother and Sunnyside.
For all of the Games of Thrones run, it was kind of a big deal for each and every actor every time their name was associated with the show. Such has been the craze and the reception it has received worldwide. Indian origin Indira Anne Varma also made an appearance on the show and a memorable one for that matter. She played the role of Ellaria Sand and literally owned the screen in all the scenes. That said, Indira Varma is a well-established actress and has worked in a vast number of films and TV shows.
Archie happens to be one of those selective artists who have a career profile full of art films, documentaries, and memorable guest appearances to boast of. However, it is her role as Kalinda Sharma in The Good Wife that still remains fresh in our memories. With her powerful persona, Archie brings a distinct quality to the screen that breaks the monotony of otherwise stereotyped Indian stock characters we see on world TV. She is of Indian descent and yet has an international quality about her. Here is a star who plays on her own terms and we love her for exactly that reason.
So fam, which one of these desi stars are you most proud of?
