Who Is Sabyasachi Mukherjee?

Sabyasachi is a luxury label by designer and couturier, Sabyasachi Mukherjee. He comes from a middle-class Bengali family of Kolkata. Mukherjee wanted to study at NIFT college but his parents disagreed. So, he sold his books to pay for the admission form and passed the exam. Four months after his graduation in 1999, Sabyasachi started his eponymous label which we all love and aspire to get married in today.

Sabyasachi’s design philosophy is very simple and clear, “Personalized imperfection of the human hand.” Deserts, gipsies, prostitutes, antique textiles, and cultural traditions of his hometown have been a lifelong inspiration for him.

It was only 10 years ago, in 2008, when he launched a line of jewellery exclusively designed by him in association with the Gaja brand. And in 2009, Sabyasachi opened his first flagship store in Kolkata. Sabyasachi sells out of five flagship stores and is a part of various multi-designer stores in India today. Apart from India, you can also find his store in America, Dubai, and London.

Fun Fact: Not many people know this about the designer but he has also designed bed and bath lines for Bombay Dyeing! Surprised, aren’t you?

Why Is Sabyasachi So Famous?

For the last 15 years, Sabyasachi has pioneered and propagated the use of handlooms in his design collection. Not only are his bridal collections a whole class apart, but his menswear, jewellery collection, and accessories are also lust-worthy. Why else would the entire Bollywood fraternity obsess over one designer so much, eh?

Her look was accessorised with a leather Sabyasachi logo belt in ivory. See, there’s a lot more Sabya has to offer than just wedding clothes. Such an easy saree, and carried so effortlessly.

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut’s Cannes 2018 look had us hooked. She wore a rendition of Sabya’s famous ‘Aakash-tara’, meaning starry sky, saree. The saree was hand-dyed and embellished with hand-cut sequins individually sewn using the zardosi technique to create a metallic yet fluid fabric. This, she accessorised with a Sabyasachi batua and the ‘Teenmaniya’ necklace, crafted out of rose-cut diamonds, Colombian emeralds and Basra pearls from the Sabyasachi Heritage Jewelry Collection.
