#MamaKnowsBest: Here’s My Mom’s Secret DIY Remedy To Get Rid Of A Face Tan

Have you ever noticed that your upper lip area is a bit darker than the rest of your face? It seems that all our karma: the caffeine, (sometimes nicotine), as well as our hormones, cause our upper lip to look darker. This is technically called melasma and according to research, found in more than 90% of us women.

If you factor in a tan due to regular exposure to the sun, you’ll probably realise that your skin is not even toned.

But don’t worry.

A) It’s normal. We all have it.

B) I found a very cost-effective, zero effort nuskha and it’s super easy.

Let me paint a picture for you. It was a Saturday morning. I was going about my regular weekend beauty routine of a face mask with Netflix. I just wasn’t satisfied with the results so I went to my mom who, I kid you not, was putting some nimbu on her face.

Not just high in flavour, the beauty benefits of lemon and lemon juice are plenty. It helps brighten skin, sloughs off dead skin cells and is acidic so is great to use as a primary ingredient in DIY beauty hacks. The ascorbic acid in the lemon juice works as a natural skin brightener.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Start by taking a ripe lemon. De-seed and cut it in two halves. If this is the first time you’re applying lemon to your face, do a patch test on your jawline. If all’s well, apply the lemon straight onto your face. Use circular motions and make sure you focus on your upper lip, jawline and forehead.

2. Leave it be. Let the juice and extracts be on your face. Let it dry for about 5 minutes.

3. Now take a face oil, I swear by Johnson’s Baby Oil (also because it’s always in my bathroom), on the tips of your fingers and start massaging your face. Use gentle, sweeping motions to massage the skin around your cheeks, eyes and forehead. I usually try to remember what they do in facials: like make an 8 on your cheeks to help firm your skin. It also feels really good to run your tips around your eyes towards your foreheads.

4. Do this for about two minutes and you will literally start feeling flakes of dirt, makeup, dead skin on your fingers. Keep doing this but make sure you use very gentle strokes. It will take a few times to get it right.

5. To close your pores and get rid of the slick oil feeling, apply a face pack. You can either mix 1 teaspoon of sandalwood and gram flour each or use any other cooling mask. Remember, the ingredient you use should be light and help you close your pores.

Instant Results: I felt my skin was a lot softer, I guess the lemon helped to exfoliate and brighten my skin and the oil just seeped through the dermal layer thanks to the massage. There was a slight difference on my upper lip area but my tan looked much better.

Since it’s DIY, the best way to go about this is to do it consistently. Try to do this once every ten days.
