Move Over Flip-Flops! Balenciaga Introduces ‘The Platform Crocs’

“I’m sorry am I hallucinating or did I just see platform Crocs from Balenciaga?” Tyler McCall of the Fashionista website tweeted.

Fashion is all about experimenting with ideas, designs that in turn, become trends to follow. At Paris Fashion Week, Jeremy Scott sent models to the ramp wearing blooms and My Little Pony-inspired t-shirts, Dolce & Gabbana chose to serve food-inspired designs along with the turquoise never-seen-before heels. At fashion weeks, both creativity and practicality are welcomed with open heart and while some stylish designs are only walk-on-the-ramp-in pieces, others are incredibly cool and comfy but Balenciaga has managed to own the Paris Fashion Week runway with his rendition of foam Crocs.

The brand did show some traditional femme printed boots and textured heels but the platform crocs stole the show. And these aren’t your regular flat Crocs, they have a platform heel of 10cm and are adorned with cartoonish charms like owl, flower, puppy, avocado and many more. Unlike regular Crocs which has lesser colour options, these ones come in a variety ranging from steel-grey to bubblegum-pink to school bus-yellow. If you have worn Crocs, you know their comfort level. Even the added height of 10cm can’t change that. And thanks to the designer, you certainly can’t call them ‘ugly’ anymore.

Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga’s designer explained his motive of re-introducing the designs to Vogue, “It’s a very innovative shoe. It’s light, it’s a one-piece foam mould and to me, these kind of techniques and working with these kind of materials is very Balenciaga. In the future you will be able to 3D print them at home because they are all one piece.”

Brilliant, isn’t he? He is not the only one who played around with Crocs though, Christopher Kane debuted his version in the world of high-fashion last September, with rock-crystal attachments and marble prints.
