We, as women, are often taught to not discuss “private matters” about our bodies. As a result, we end up feeling uncomfortable talking to our gynaecologists about so many topics! Ladies, you should know that the only way to receive correct guidance and treatment is to be completely open in front of your gynaes! Here is a list of 7 things you should NEVER be embarrassed to talk to your gynae about!
1. My boyfriend says I smell funny… down there.
Vaginal discharge often has an unusual odour. While it is usually perfectly normal for bodily fluids to have an odour, sometimes the odour can be very strong. This could be an indication of a bacterial or yeast infection. If you feel like your discharge is unusually smelly, please don’t hesitate to consult your gynaecologist regarding the same! Don’t be embarrassed about talking things out with your gynae. After all, it is their job to guide you.
2. Sex is painful. What should I do?
A lot of women feel uncomfortable about discussing their sex lives with their gynaecologist. Ladies, this is definitely not something you should be embarrassed about. Sex should be fun for both the people involved, and if it hurts, then you need to talk to your gynae about it. It could simply be a lubrication issue, or it could be more serious. Either ways, your gynaecologist should be able to help you out, so don’t be embarrassed about this.
3. My period is late!
We understand how embarrassing this can be, especially if you’re an unmarried girl in India. But, girls, the fact remains that if your period is late, you need to see your gynae. It is their job to guide you. Never feel embarrassed about addressing this issue, because you have done nothing wrong!
4. What is the safest form of birth control?
We are born into a society where birth control and premarital sex are often considered taboos. The result is that many women often feel awkward discussing these matters with their gynaecologists. Even married women sometimes don’t want to ask their gynae about birth control. The fact remains that you should not end up with an unplanned pregnancy just because you were too embarrassed to talk to your gynae about this. Figure out what form of birth control works best for you, whether it is pills, condoms, sterilization or any of the others.
5. Should I be worried about my itching vagina?
Itching vaginas can be caused by anything from poor hygiene to yeast infections to STDs. The best course of action is to talk to your gynaecologist to see what the cause of your itching is if it persists for a few days even after you’ve cleaned yourself thoroughly.
6. What’s the reason for my low sex drive?
Your gynaecologist is not going to judge you for this. If you think that your libido has been decreasing over time, maybe it’s time to see a gynae about it. The reasons for a low sex drive can be many – physical, psychological or relationship problems. If the reason is physical, no better person than your gynae to help you out!
7. The word ‘Vagina’
So many young girls are so ashamed to utter the “V-word” that they prefer Googling their symptoms rather than visiting a gynaecologist. A study has found over half the girls aged between 18-24 simply don’t want to say ‘vagina’ in front of their doctors! Ladies, if this is you, please don’t be embarrassed about the word! After all, it is part of your body and you should never be ashamed of it!
