Does Vaginal Discharge Indicate A Healthy Vagina? Here’s All You Need To Know

Back in 2016, a rather bizarre trend went viral on social media—#PantyChallenge. As a part of the challenge, women shared pictures of their used, discharge-free underwear calling it a sign of good health and clean vagina! In a world where vaginal health is not taken seriously, the misleading posts of squeaky clean used panties only made the situation worse. It left many women wondering if vaginal discharge is normal? In fact, this still happens to be one of the most frequently asked question on Google. That’s why we decided to clear the air. Here’s everything you need to know about vaginal discharge:

Is Vaginal Discharge Normal?

Yes! Vaginal discharge is most often a normal and regular occurrence. It is produced by the vaginal and cervical glands to get rid of the old cells lining the vagina and keep it clean, lubricated and healthy. That’s the self-cleansing mechanism of the vagina. And that’s why your gynae asks you to stay away from vaginal-cleansing practices like douching and washing.

How Much Vaginal Discharge Is Normal?

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, average daily discharge amounts to about one-half to one teaspoon (2 to 5 ml). However, it can vary from person to person. You could experience a little discharge now and then or every day. In fact, the “normal” discharge amount might vary several times with hormonal changes throughout the different phases of your menstrual cycle and life.

Vaginal Discharge Colour Guide

The regular vaginal discharge is white or clear, mucus-like, and mostly odourless. It is secreted as a part of the vagina-cleansing process and during sexual arousal for lubrication. However, certain colour and texture changes in the vaginal fluid can be indicative of an underlying health issue. Here’s a guide to help you identify the problem in case you notice anything unusual:

Egg-White

You may notice sticky, egg-white fluid in the middle of your menstrual cycle around ovulation and a thicker, opaque version a few days before your period. Relax, there is nothing to worry. The former is usually indicative of the fertile period you’re in. If you’re planning a baby, this is the time to have more fun between the sheets. If not, this is the time to double up on birth control. The latter indicates that Aunt Flo is about to arrive.

Red

No points for guessing, red fluid=Aunt Flo. Minor spotting around ovulation time is common. But, if you’re pregnant and notice blood on your undies frequently, it could be due to a serious condition like a miscarriage or endometriosis.

Brown

A brownish discharge three-four days after your period is usually nothing to worry about. It’s simply the uterus shedding the last of its lining. The darker colour can be attributed to the older, oxidised blood mixed with cervical mucus. However, regular brown spotting can be indicative of a benign fibroid or endometrial cancer.

Green

Green discharge combined with vaginal irritation is typically a sign of an STI known as trichomoniasis. It can be treated with the right medication. So, visit your doc if you notice a greenish fluid on your undies.

Cottage Cheese-Like

A white curdled, cottage-cheese-like discharge accompanied by symptoms like itching and burning usually indicates a yeast infection. It can also be due to bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that sometimes mimic the symptoms of a yeast infection.

Milky Grey

Milky grey discharge with a fishy odour that gets worse after your period or having sex can be due to bacterial vaginosis. Even though it’s not an STI, it may increase your risk for contracting one. So visit your doc for the right diagnose.
