Not Kanyadaan, This Couple Had A Kunwardaan & Vidaai For The Groom

Desi weddings are all about flaunting our age-old traditions and rituals. But things are changing now. From turning their haldi into a fun poolside party to doing away with certain regressive traditions, couples are doing things their own way and we’re all for it. Even if that means introducing new rituals to add a touch of equality.

In April 2022, Palasha and Shiv Verma tied the knot in a dreamy wedding. They had every customary celebration in place–including the haldi, mehendi, and vidaai ceremonies–but with a TWIST! The bride and the groom decided to make their wedding ceremony as gender-neutral as possible.

Palasha and Shiv introduced kunwardaan in correspondence to Kanyadaan (a ritual where the father of the bride gives her away). The bride even successfully did away with wearing a mangalsutra. Further, they broke another stereotype and applied sindoor on each other’s forehead, which typically is only applied on the bride’s forehead. But wait, there’s more! Palasha and Shiv had a vidaai ceremony for the groom as well. In the viral video, Shiv can be seen tossing the rice while walking towards the exit along with Palasha.
