My anticipation is through the roof for the upcoming Met Gala, with just a few days left until the grand event on May 6 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” will serve as the thematic backdrop for the evening’s sartorial choices while the dress will be The Garden of Time.
Renowned as fashion’s ‘biggest night out’, the Met Gala is a prestigious event that brings together the most influential figures in fashion, film, and music. But this event stands out because creativity will know no bounds for most designers and guests will strive to make a lasting impression with their sartorial choices.
As I eagerly await the festivities, there’s a sense of curiosity in me about which celebrities will grace the red carpet, and whether any desi stars will shine among them. In previous years, Indian celebrities like Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt have captivated audiences with their stunning ensembles. While I wait, Let’s take a look at some of the Indian stars who have turned heads at the event over the years and what we can expect from them in 2024.
1. Priyanka Chopra Jonas:
Queen PC has been serving looks at the Met Gala for years now, but who can forget her iconic trench coat gown by Ralph Lauren in 2017? It was her debut look, and boy, did she make heads turn! Tagged along with her now-husband Nick Jonas, she literally shut down the red carpet with that dramatic train!
2. Deepika Padukone:
The soon-to-be-mommy has consistently wowed the audience with her elegant and regal choices. From her Tommy Hilfiger satin gown debut in 2017 to the extravagant Zac Posen custom pink lurex Jacquard gown in 2019, Deepika’s fashion evolution at the Met Gala has been nothing short of extraordinary. 3. Natasha Poonawalla
The entrepreneur cum fashionista made her Met Gala debut in 2018, and she did not disappoint. Rocking a Prabul Gurung gown, with New York-inspired graffiti prints and a corset bodice, Poonawala made a name for herself for herself. But her most iconic Met Gala look came in 2022 when she wore a Sabyasachi saree paired with a Schirappila gold corset top. This look further cemented her status as a fashionista.
4. Isha Ambani:
The heiress brought some serious glam to the Met Gala in 2019 with her stunning Prabal Gurung gown. Embellished with crystals and feathers, she looked like a true princess straight out of a fairytale. But her actual awe-worthy moment came in 2023 when she again wore a Prabal Gurung creation. It was a one-shoulder tastefully embellished saree gown. With thousands of pearls and crystals and a silk chiffon train, it was surely a look to remember.
