Ever since the Miss World pageant, an international beauty contest, was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951, some girls began to realise those dreams. Along with Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth, this pageant is one of the 'Big Four' international pageants—the most coveted beauty titles when it comes to international pageant competitions.

    Since the pageant was founded in 1951, let's learn some fun facts about all the contestants till 1960.

    Miss World 1951-Kiki Hakansson

    The first-ever miss world, Kiki Hakansson, was born in Sweden in 1929 and won the pageant held in London. She had previously won the title of Miss Sweden and was a model by profession.

    Fun fact: she was the only one to be crowned in a bikini, after which she was condemned by the Pope. This led to the ban of bikinis in the pageant in 1952. Even though bikini was reintroduced later, Kiki remains the only one to have been crowned wearing a bikini.

    Miss World 1952 – May-Louise Flodin

    The second winner of the Miss World title was a beauty called May-Louise Flodin. Like Kiki, she was also Swedish, a former Miss Sweden winner, and also a model!

    Miss World 1953 – Denise Perrier

    Born in France in 1935, Denise was declared the winner of the Miss World pageant in 1953. She later went on to become an actress, her most famous role being in the James Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever. She was also actively involved in politics.

    Miss World 1954 – Antigone Costanda

    The fourth winner of the pageant, Antigone, was born and bred in Egypt. She was a model by profession and later went on to run her own interior designing company.

    Born in 1936, Susana was the first woman from Venezuela to bag the Miss World title. As you know, this feat has been repeated several times after her. She later turned to acting and appeared in several films and TV shows.

    Miss World 1956 – Petra Schürmann

    Born in 1956, Petra was the first German to bag the title of Miss World. She has worked in the fields of films, radio and television and authored a few books--a powerhouse of true talent!

    Miss World 1957 – Marita Lindahl

    In the Miss World pageant held in 1957, Finnish beauty Marita won the coveted crown. She was a model by profession.

    Miss World 1958 – Penelope Anne Coelen

    This South African beauty won the coveted crown in the year 1958 in London. Besides being a model and actor, she also ventured into fashion, launching her own line of clothing and beauty products.

    Miss World 1959 – Corine Rottschäfer

    In the year 1959, it was a stunner from The Netherlands who won the Miss World title. She went on to have a very successful modelling career and even launched her own modelling agency in the Netherlands.

    Miss World 1960 – Norma Cappagli

    This gorgeous lady was born and bred in Buenos Aires, Argentina and crowned Miss World in 1960 in London. She had previously won the title of Miss Argentina and was a model by profession.

    The first Miss World winner from Wales, Rosemarie won the crown in 1961. She was a successful model and actor.

    Miss World 1962 – Catharina Lodders

    The second beauty to win the title from the Netherlands, Catharina was crowned the winner in 1962. She had previously won the title of Miss Holland and was a model.

    Miss World 1963 – Carole Joan Crawford

    Carole made Jamaica proud by being crowned the first Miss World from her country. Fun fact: The Jamaica Post issued a set of stamps imprinted with her picture after she won the title.

    Miss World 1964 –Ann Sidney

    Ann Sidney, an Englishwoman, was born in 1944 and won the title in 1964. She went on to become a famous actor, appearing in movies like The Avengers, Performance, and Are You Being Served?

    The UK experienced a double whammy and had TWO Miss World winner from their country win the title back to back! Lesley was crowned in 1965, and was an actor and a model.

    Miss World 1966 – Reita Faria

    Reita made history by not only being the first contestant from India to win the title, but also the first woman from the continent of Asia! She was previously crowned Miss Bombay 1966 and Eve’s Weekly Miss India 1966. Instead of going down a glamorous career path of acting or modelling, this beauty decided to pursue a degree in MBBS.

    Miss World 1967 – Madeline Hartog-Bel

    Born in 1946, Madeline was the first contestant from the country of Peru to bag the crown. She was also a semi-finalist in the Miss Universe 1966 contest.

    Miss World 1968 – Penelope Plummer

    This Australian stunner won the title in 1968 and was a librarian by profession. Later, she had a successful career as an actor and a model.

    Miss World 1969 – Eva Rueber-Staier

    Eva was the first Austrian beauty to take the crown back home to her country. She later had a very successful acting career, appearing in films like The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, and Octopussy

    Miss World 1970 – Jennifer Hosten

    Jennifer was the first beauty to bag the title from the country of Grenada. However, her reign wasn't without controversy. There were rumours that she had won because of the influence exerted by the Prime Minister of her country, who was one of the judges. She went on to become a radio announcer, development worker, diplomat, author, and model.

    This gorgeous Brazillian bombshell, who won the world's heart in 1971, was a doctor by profession, and helped underprivileged children by giving them medical care when required.

    Miss World 1972 – Belinda Green

    Born in 1952, Belinda was the second Australian beauty to win the title. She was crowned in London in 1972.

    Miss World 1973 – Marjorie Wallace

    Marjorie was the first woman from the United States of America to win the title in 1973. However, she faced scandal after scandal. She was stripped of her title after 104 days for not “fulfilling the basic requirements of the job”. The stunner was reportedly engaged to Formula One driver Peter Revson. However, she had an affair with the Welsh singer Tom Jones. This violated her contract and she was asked to step down from her role. 

    Miss World 1974 – Anneline Kriel

    The title of Miss World was first won by England's Helen Morgan in 1974. However, it was soon discovered that she was unmarried but had an eighteen-month-old child. She was stripped of her title and the crown was then passed on to South Africa's Anneline Kriel, who became a famous model.

    Miss World 1975 – Wilnelia Merced

    Born in 1957, Wilnelia was the first beauty from Puerto Rico to win the title. She was a model and actor and later founded a charity to help Puerto Rico’s underprivileged children.

    Miss World 1976 – Cindy Breakspeare

    Born in 1954, Cindy did Canada proud by becoming the first woman from the country to win the prestigious title. She went on to become a very famous jazz musician.

    Swedish beauty Mary bagged the third such title for her country in 1977. She has worked in several films, including two James Bond movies – Octopussy and A View to a Kill

    Silvana was the second stunner from Argentina to take the title back to her country. She later had a successful career as a model and an actor. 

    Miss World 1979 – Gina Swainson

    Gina was the first woman from Bermuda to win the title for her country in 1979. After she won, her country honoured her by putting her image on Bermudian postage stamps.

    Miss World 1980 – Gabriella Brum And Kimberley Santos

    This was a difficult year for the pageant winners. The first winner, Gabriella from Germany, resigned just 18 hours later, stating that her boyfriend was against her holding this title. The crown the passed on to the first runner up, America's Kimberly, who's life took a tragic turn when her boyfriend shot himself upon hearing the news of her signing a modelling contract to go to Japan.

    Israeli beauty Linor deserved this crown for more than one reasons. She was raped at knifepoint by her travel agent only a short while before she won the crown. After winning the title, she became an advocate against sexual violence.

    Indian beauty Yukta Mookhey won yet another crown for India in the year 1999. She is an actor, model and politician and is also involved in social and charitable causes for the underprivileged. Currently, she is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party in India.
