Ssshhhh…Koi Hai? 10 Haunted Places in Mumbai To Visit If You’re Brave

As an out and out Mumbaikar, this city isn’t just home to me, but one of my favourite cities to live in India. The energy is infectious and the people you cross paths with all have interesting stories to tell. However, there’s also a dark side to Mumbai. Places you won’t see in itineraries because you’d be too spooked out to visit. No one can really be sure how true they are, but some places are downright creepy. Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, if you’re brave enough, you should explore these haunted places in Mumbai that claim to be paranormal in nature  & hold some creepy horror stories behind them. Let’s check them out, shall we?

10 Haunted Places in Mumbai That Will Scare You From Head To Toe

Read below the 10 most haunted places in Mumbai that you shouldn’t dare to visit alone.

1. Mindspace Backroad, Malad West

During the day, this road is rather peaceful as it has less traffic and is crowded with lovers and college kids. However, things start to get freaky at night. I’ve had friends who work in call centres around the area who claim to hear scary voices and howling at 2:30-3 am. Accidents, suicides and murder, have taken place there during night time. I’m not sure how far is true or just the mind playing tricks, but I’m definitely not going to travel there after the clock strikes 12. The link road is a better option here.

2. The Towers of Silence, Malabar Hills

My college had once taken my classmates and me on a day trip to The Towers of Silence. I remember the silence and overall energy of the place made us feel rather uncomfortable. It’s a place that belongs to the Parsi community. In line with Zorashtrian customs, bodies of the deceased used to be left here to be consumed by the vultures and other predatory birds. Although this practice is no longer followed and the place seemed peaceful, I got a not-so-friendly vibe from there. I just knew I had to leave before sunset. After paying my respects, I quickly excused myself and left the place.

3. Aarey Colony, Goregaon

There are so many spooky stories around Goregaon’s Aarey Colony that it becomes tough to believe whether they’re true or not. However, there’s one common story that everyone talks about and it still sends chills down my spine each time I hear about it. Many people claim to have spotted a woman with her child asking for a lift. Once the vehicle pulls over, both lady and child disappear leaving both, the driver and passenger stunned. I’ve travelled that stretch plenty of times during the day, but try to avoid it after dark. Don’t travel alone there at night because some parts of the road don’t have streetlights and it could get lonely and creepy if your vehicle were to break down there. It’s best to travel or explore the place when you have a group of friends with you.

4. The Marve & Madh Island Road

My uncle told me about this spooky tale since he lives around there. He said that long ago, a bride was murdered on her wedding night and her body was dumped in the nearby mangrove forest. On some nights, people have spotted her spirit aimlessly roaming on the streets and stopping vehicles asking for help. Accidents were soon to follow after witnessing this paranormal activity.

5. Vrindavan Society, Thane West

During the day, this society looks and feels like any other society. However, at night, security guards have said that they hear strange sounds and some of them have even felt like they’ve got slapped at night if they’re snooze during work hours. Apparently, an old man committed suicide from one of the buildings in that society and if the news is true, his spirit is not at peace still.

6. The D’Souza Chawl, Mahim

The D’Souza Chawl at Mahim used to be a normal place where people use to live. That particular chawl also has a well that was used by the people to fill water and wash clothes. Since the well did not have boundary walls around it, it took the life of an elderly woman one day. She struggled for quite a while until she gave up and drowned. She had a painful death and till today, many claim to have spotted her spirit around the area at night. There are no reports of the ghost attacking anyone, but sightings are quite often brought to light.

7. Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali East

I’ve been to Sanjay Gandhi National Park quite a few times. Nothing odd or shady about this place, but some patches are downright spooky. Maybe it’s because one of the locals told me about this story. She said that people often encounter a mysterious hitchhiker at random locations. The lady disappears the moment you acknowledge her presence. She’s spotted at different areas of the park at different times of the day. However, most reports have been around the Kanheri caves. Are you brave enough to visit?

8. Grand Paradi Towers, Malabar Hill

More than 20 people have committed suicide here. Most members belonged to the same family. Even though the building was constructed around the 1970s, till date some flats are vacant and not bought yet. To ward off the evil energy, many pujas have been done here. but residents still say that they hear screams and cries at night. When there’s no one on the floor, they feel like someone is watching them too. Knowing what a scaredy-cat I am, even if someone gave me a free flat in those posh towers, I’d return the house keys to them. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

9. Poonam Chambers, Worli

Poonam Chambers has had the worst luck ever. A blast took place here in the 1993 bomb blasts and a wall crashed here in 1997. Many people have lost their lives here. Due to these incidents, many ghosts are reported to roam around this area at night. Rattling doors, screams, cries and shadows have been common experiences that have been reported.

10. Taj Mahal Hotel, Appollo Bunder

Sure the Taj Mahal Hotel looks pretty on the outside, however, I can’t say the same about the inside. Apparently, years ago, the architect of the building committed suicide there because of an architectural error. At night, he seems to roam around the lobby in the old wing. It’s a story that’s known by the staff and frequent guests of the Taj.
