No one – believe us when we say this – NO ONE has an endless supply of moolah. Some budgets are big and others are small – it’s really just as simple as that. Living on a budget is NOT something to be ashamed of. In fact, it’s just a building block to success – heard of “a penny saved is a penny earned”? But just because you’re living on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t live it up! All you have to do is act smart and cut unnecessary costs - to be able to save up for the things you REALLY want.
We tell you just how!
1. Walk Your Way To Savings AND Health
So, you ran out of milk or eggs or bread or veggies just before a meal. We’re pretty sure all of it is available not too far from your house. So, what do you do? Hop on to an auto or a rickshaw, right? WRONG! Walk the distance, woman! Not only will this save you some cash – Rs 30/35 saved on auto fare every day adds up to roughly Rs 1,000 a month, after all
– but will also give you a chance to get out of the house and breathe in some fresh air. Trust us, your lungs (and your wallet) will thank you!
2. Coupons – They’re Everywhere!
Too lazy to cook? Having friends over? Sure, it calls for an extra-extra large pizza. But not without coupons. Frankly, paying the absolute sum mentioned on the menu (plus taxes) is just silly. So, take out that super smart phone of yours and check out Coupondunia.in
– on many days these sites offer as much as 50% off on food. Happy hogging! ;-)
3. Learn How To Cook, Please!
Though ordering in is the most convenient way to go about dinner after a long day - you don’t realize the kind of harm it is doing your system (and this is NOT mommy rant) – learning how to cook eggs six different ways or rustling up a quick chicken (or vegetable) pulao or just simply roasting vegetables is going to save you a LOT of money (and calories)! Plus, YouTube
can be with you every step of the way!
4. The Internet Is Not Meant Just For Social Networking
We’re pretty sure you haven’t heard of a site called Freecycle.org
. It’s basically a site on which people are offering to get rid of things for free. And wanting things too, of course. So visit the site, choose your locality and find fellow recyclers to avoid spending on things like book racks or side tables or clothes stands! If you’re moving to a new city, or just want to replace something you’ve gotten bored of, put it up on the site and help out a fellow recycler.
While we’re at it, have you heard of this awesome app called Crown It
? Basically, it lets you earn reward points for all the food bills you’ve spent your money on. What do these reward points do? They help you get coupons for Jabong
(one of the many sites they have tie-ups with) AND pay your phone bills! You didn’t know eating out could pay your phone bills, did you?!
5. Make A Shopping List And Stick To It
Going to the grocery store for “essentials” turns out to be more expensive than you’d originally thought, doesn’t it? So, save yourself the regret of buying that bottle of sandwich spread or cake mix you thought you might end up using someday - and make a list before you head out to the grocery store. And, most importantly, STICK TO IT!
6. Save Up On Furniture And Furnishing Expenses
Everyone likes doing up their room every once in a while. That doesn’t mean you’d head to the fancy Home Store at the first opportunity you get. Visit a “secret” furniture market in your city and get refurbished furniture customized to your needs instead! Yes, it does sound like some effort, but the money saved will be totally worth it! Some of those furniture makers at such markets would also be glad to make your furniture from scratch if you provide them the design you want. So, put on your most comfortable pair of shoes and head out!
7. Resist The Urge - Wait For Sale Season
The super-cute dress you spotted while window shopping WILL be available on sale eventually. As much as you’d like to own it right now, resist the urge – impromptu shopping sprees are the worst enemies of budgets. And, frankly, when you see the sale price couple of months down the line, you’d just feel sad about having bought it on full price!
8. Do NOT Hoard
Remember that dress you bought online that doesn’t actually fit right, so you’ve never actually worn it? Or that fancy appliance you thought you’d make full use of? Yeah, find those, click pictures and sell them off on Quickr
. A little extra money never really hurt anyone. :-)
You know those times when you’re travelling out of town and don’t really want to take the bus or train? Guess what? You CAN find people who are headed the same way and decide to split car fare between the number of heads. To your rescue comes the BlaBlaCar
app. Check it out, and don’t forget to thank us!
10. Set Your Budget BEFORE Stepping Out
And research your venue on Zomato
accordingly. After a few drinks, the word “budget” does not make much sense - so don’t set yourself up for an expensive night by NOT planning in advance. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to have one hell of a night!
