Not going to lie, but I had way too many misconceptions about surrogacy while growing up. All thanks to our Indian daily soaps. I mean, for the longest time, I believed that surrogate mothers need to sleep with the man to get preggers. Can you believe how lame that is?! Anyway, I soon unlearned all the ridiculous notions that these shows had fed me and educated myself better.
One of the major reasons why a lot of people lack awareness about surrogacy in our country is because it is treated as a hush-hush topic. Yes, even today. Let’s not even get into the whys and hows of it because honestly, it does not make any sense. But, what does make sense is Bollywood movies like Mimi that are trying to make conversations around the subject easier. They break myths about surrogacy, smash stereotypes and also challenge the social belief that only married women can experience motherhood. And, THANK GOD for that!
7 Movies That Talk About Surrogacy & Single Moms
From the ones that shed light on surrogacy to those that destigmatise being pregnant before (or without) marriage, here’s the list of movies that you can binge-watch this weekend:
Mimi
This latest movie is about Mimi (Kriti Sanon) and the struggles she faces as a surrogate victim. The couple who wants the baby changes their minds once it’s too late, leaves the mother stranded and abandons their unborn child. We have to say that the pain and emotions Kriti conveys as a single mom will make you emotional AF. Pankaj Tripathi, on the other hand, is as phenomenal as always. While the movie has got almost everything right, we wish they were more sensitive while talking about pro-life.

Chori Chori Chupke Chupke
While Mimi tells us what happens when parents abandon the surrogate mom, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke shows us the other side of the coin. Madhubala (Priety Zinta) changes her mind at the very last moment and decides not to give away the child to Raj and Priya (Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji). NGL, both these situations are quite common IRL and that’s why it’s a good idea to know your legal rights before opting for surrogacy.

Good Newwz
Good Newwz is about an IVF (in vitro fertilization) process gone terribly wrong. Hope we have your focus because things are about to get complicated. Monica and Honey (Kiara Advani and Diljit Dosanjh) are a couple who have opted for IVF just like Deepti and Varun (Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor). But, due to some medical error, Monica is impregnated with Varun’s child and Deepti with Honey’s. See, it’s complicated AF, right?
Watch this one to know about all the ups and downs women go through in their nine-month journey. It’s funny, heart-wrenching, and so emotional!

Vicky Donor
While there are a lot of Bollywood movies that talk about surrogate moms, only a few revolve around sperm donors. Vicky Donor is one such gem.
While Vicky (Ayushmann Khurrana) commercialises the process initially, he later understands the impact he has on other parents’ life. It’s funny, witty, and breaks a lot of social stigmas attached to the subject.

Badnaam Gali
We’re pretty sure that most of you haven’t heard about this movie. Well, it’s time to change that. Badnaam Gali is about a surrogate mom, Nayonika (Patralekha Paul), who challenges societal norms by just being herself and doing what she wants to do. It also stars Divyendu Sharma as Randeep who tells us that it’s never too late to get rid of internalised misogyny. Way too funny and defs something that you shouldn’t miss.

Salaam Namaste
Our society expects us to get married, have babies and do both of them exactly in that order. Well, Salaam Namaste, a movie quite ahead of its time, tells society to mind their own sweet business. It’s about a couple—Ambar and Nikhil (Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta)—who’re in a live-in relationship. But, things go south when they have to deal with an unexpected pregnancy. While Ambar wants to have the child, Nikhil doesn’t.
The movie talks about live-in relationships, getting preggers before marriage and single moms. Isn’t this a good reason for you to binge-watch this over the weekend? We defs think so!

Paa
The scene is still very clear—Vidya’s (played by Vidya Balan) mother explains to Amol (Abhishek Bachchan) that it’s not easy for a woman to raise a child alone. But, once she does that, she’s strong enough to do anything in her life, alone. NGL, I still get goosebumps whenever I see this movie.
It’s about Auro (Amitabh Bachchan), who’s suffering from a genetic disorder called progeria, and wishes to meet his father without hurting his mom. It’s also about a single mom, who raises him without worrying about what others would think. NGL, this one is a real tear-jerker and we suggest you keep your tissue box handy.
