Even after months of protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, the government has not repealed it. Citizens all over the country are standing up and taking to the streets to show their dissent and raise their voice against the Act along with the NRC. Hundreds of people gathered around Jamia Millia Islamia to protest the same and got into a scuffle with the police.
Jamia students, alumni, and people from local areas got together outside the university and said that they will be marching towards the Parliament House. Shouting slogans of “kagaz nahin dikhayenge (we won’t show any documents)” and azadi (freedom), they were intercepted by the police, who said the protesters did not have any permission to march to parliament.
After this, the police barricaded the area and the scuffle broke out at the last barricade when the protestors insisted on moving forward.
Last evening, a student from the university claimed that a woman of the varsity “suffered injuries on her private parts” after being hit by Delhi police officers.
A student of Jamia who has been admitted to the hospital told a news portal, “They were pushing us aside; they had all this gear on. They were saying that they are not using batons, but when we were in the crowd and stranded, they were pushing us and were hitting us below the belt. They were hitting us on our legs. There is a woman student who has been severely injured on her sensitive parts, which is not good. There was also a stampede-like situation, where people got choked and nauseated. That is what happened with me also. I fainted twice. We had no space to breathe.”
The clash came as the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government over the two-month-long protest at Shaheen Bagh. The women and children protesting on the streets in this neighborhood have inspired protests all over India and has become the epicenter of dissent and agitation against the CAA and NRC.
