Hailey Bieber’s glazed-donut glow might have catapulted into a full-throttle trend online; but the end-result isn’t all thanks to skincare. Bieber’s cornucopia of carousels on Instagram is almost always embellished with a natural-looking, dewy-dumpling aesthetic — and though the look has amassed a cult-following amongst followers, the credit isn’t just Rhode but the model’s go-to MUA: Mary Phillips. But Phillips’ secret doesn’t lie with a product. Her approach to beauty is disruptive and creative, and it’s a specific technique she turns to that sets the model’s look apart from the rest of Hollywood. Even J.Lo and Kendall are subscribers. Here’s what you need to know.
This Celebrity MUA’s ‘Reverse’ Technique Is Worth Taking Note Of
Mary Phillip’s secret to unlocking Hailey and Kendall’s ultra-glazed, fresh-faced effect is more about the process than the product. Though Phillips enlists the expertise of high-end concealers and foundations to play into the aesthetic, the MUA believes in back-peddling their routine altogether. Note that she preps and primes the face with skincare before going all in.
While this technique disrupts the very tenets of beauty, the end-result is a soft-focus, second-skin-like glow that sets the A-listers apart from the rest. This is simply because Phillips sculpts and chisels the model’s faces first before enhancing their skin with concealer and foundation. Tara demonstrates the process by following Phillips’ routine on one side of the face to determine whether the results are truly groundbreaking or not.
She stripes the cheekbones and jawline with some contour before blending it all in with a brush. The next step involves concealing. Mary typically conceals the under-eyes as well as the area around the nose and lips. She applies some of the product around the middle of the forehead too.
Tara says that Mary goes in with foundation next — but she does so with a big, fluffy (powder) brush. She smears some of the product on the back of her palm before going all over the face with the brush. The influencer notices that the Mary Phillips’ side doesn’t crease at all courtesy of how thin and lightweight the process of application is — but the side with the conventional foundation-concealer-contour technique displays creases and cakiness to a certain extent.
Every layer blends in seamlessly too. You don’t see any lines under the eyes, and there’s no need to bake the area because you’ve locked the concealer under the foundation. The sharpness of the contour has been placated by the concealer-foundation filter too — endowing the skin with a natural-looking sculpt and glow. Notice how Mary’s side boasts an all-over glow while the other side just glows in the area that’s been glazed with highlighter.
Yup. That’s the technique at play. Notice how effortlessly it captures the lit-from-within glow. Hailey — we know.
That, too.
