Brace Yourself For More ‘Plane Wali Selfies’ As Govt Approves In-Flight Wi-Fi

How often have you had the urge to use Wi-Fi when you’re bored as hell in your flight? A not-so-chatty fellow passenger or manspreading uncles will definitely make you want to jump out of the plane. Now, while that is not recommended at all, here’s another thing that you can do. You may soon be able to access Internet services while you’re on your flight. So yes, you can watch your favourite Olympic match you saved for later–without getting disturbed or talk to your BFF on DMs.

The Official Notification

In a recent development, Indian Civil Aviation Ministry issued a notification to allow airlines to provide Wi-Fi on board. “The Pilot-in-Command may permit the access of Internet services by passengers on board an aircraft in flight, through Wi-Fi on board, when laptop, smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, e-reader or a point of sale device is used in flight mode or airplane mode,” said the notification.

What It Means For You

You’ll now be able to do all of these while you are in a flight:

  • watch the next episode of that telenovela that ended with a cliffhanger
  • chat with friends and family
  • watch the World Cup matches
  • upload your clouds wali picture right then and there while you’re still up in the air

However, this won’t be free of cost. Just like the airlines will have to spend a lot of money in order to install the connectivity equipment, you will also have to shell out a lot in order to be able to avail this facility.

About 30 airlines already offer wi-fi for passengers such as AirAsia, Air France, British Airways, Egypt Air, Emirates, Air New Zealand, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic. However, they have to switch off the facility inside Indian airspace.

Well, now that India will have in-flight Wi-Fi soon, what will you use the Internet services for during your journey next?
