There are two types of skincare enthusiasts out there – one who swears by luxury skincare products and the other, who fancies drugstore skincare products. Luxury skincare products cost more money, while drugstore skincare products come with affordable price tags. If you’re new to skincare and looking to find your niche, don’t worry, we’re here to guide you at every step. We’ll point out the key differences between luxury and drugstore products. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which one suits your lifestyle and budget the best.
It’s All About The Packaging

First things first, expensive products don’t necessarily translate to better products. A good sum of money goes into marketing, PR and packaging of the product. Glass bottles are more expensive than plastic. Plus, text and colouring on the product cost money as well. Many a time, brands focus more on the aesthetics of the product that what the product actually contains or does. Be aware of such products. Before you make a purchase, keep your skin type in mind. Read up on reviews and blogs. All of these factors will help you make better purchasing decisions in the future.
What’s In It Is What Matters
The most important part of a product is the concentration of the ingredients in it. The numbers are usually mentioned on the ingredient list and the first 5 ingredients that you see makes up for at least 70-85% of the product. High-quality skincare products focus on pure ingredients with the absence of filler ingredients, preservatives, fragrances, parabens and silicones. There’s also a lesser chance of your skin experiencing an allergic reaction.
Cheap and poor quality skincare products have fewer potent ingredients and could be dangerous to your skin. Always check the ingredient lists of these products first. Do a patch test if you must. If you experience any rash or allergy after trying out the product, wash it off immediately.
How About Potency?

Sometimes, a luxury skincare product may contain the same active ingredients than in a drugstore one. However, the concentrations will be different. If you spot ingredients like retinol, hyaluronic acid, rosehip oil, ceramides, glycerin at the top of the ingredient list, then you’ve bagged yourself a good quality product. However, if it’s a below-average product, these very ingredients would be listed in the middle or at the end of the ingredient list.
The bottom line is that it doesn’t matter if the skincare products are categorised as luxury or drugstore. What matters is the ingredient list. To shop for good skincare products, you must look beyond the packaging and focus only on the key ingredients of a product. Good luck!
