Margarita Sippin’ & Skinny Dippin’: All You Need To Know About Enjoying Safe Sex In The Pool

Picture this: You and bae are off for a mini getaway and chilling in your pool villa. A cocktail in one hand and your eye candy all wet and dripping right in front of you. A few romantic glances and some electrifying touches later, your pool chilling gets intense and you end up making love–in the water.

Doesn’t this sound like a sultry, romantic scenario–one that we’ve all run through our heads multiple times? Well, summer’s the season for margarita sippin’ and skinny dippin’. So, if you’re in the mood to turn your pool-sex dream into a reality, we’re here for you. However, there are a few things you need to know before taking your pleasure sesh from your bed to the pool. We got in touch with Dr Madhu Goel, Associate Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis La Femme, Delhi to get some insight into the matter. Here are 5 things you need to be aware of before diving right in with bae:

You May Get An Infection

While the sheer thought of having sex in the pool may give you butterflies, doing it for real can give you a vaginal infection. “The pool water may be contaminated if it hasn’t been changed after use by previous swimmers. The dirt and dust exposure in open pools can also make its hygiene questionable,” says Dr Madhu. “If this bacteria-laden water enters the vagina during sexual intercourse in the pool, it can lead to infections like bacterial vaginosis, a painful condition in which the vagina gets inflamed,” she warns. Additionally, the chlorine in the pool’s water can alter the vagina’s natural acidic pH and make it more prone to infections.

Pregnancy & STI Risk Is High

The water from the pool can make the condom slip. In fact, you may end up not using a condom altogether when skinny dipping with bae. “The risk of an unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection from not using protection is as high during pool sex as it is otherwise. So, one must get tested for STIs and have an emergency contraceptive in case of unprotected sex or condom failure in the pool,” suggests Dr Madhu.

You May Get Injured

Aah! Just like the condom, the water can make you slip too. “One must be extremely careful, especially while changing positions during pool sex. The slipperiness can lead to a major injury,” warns Dr Madhu.

It Can Irritate Your Genital Skin

We all experience dry and itchy limbs post a dip in the pool. Now, imagine the plight of your sensitive genital skin from the exposure to chlorine in the pool water. “Chlorine is used to disinfect the pool water. Excessive exposure to it during sexual intercourse in the water can dry out the vulvar skin. It can even cause irritation, redness, and rashes,” warns Dr Madhu.

You’ve Got To Be Prepared

If you’ve already made up your mind to experiment and have sex in the pool, make sure you’re well prepared before the act. Slather on your sunscreen and keep these three products handy:

Sirona’s Refreshing Intimate Wash

Post sex, wash your intimate area immediately with this gentle cleanser. Packed with natural ingredients like Tasmanaian pepper fruit, it can clean your nether regions and remove the germs without drying out your tender genital skin.

Anti-Chafing Cream

Made with butterbur and golden root, this product works like a soothing balm on irritated genital skin. Apply it to your intimate area to prevent or soothe rashes, redness, and irritation post sex.

Moisturising Lube Tube

This product from Sirona’s personal care range can help relieve vaginal dryness. So, if matters down there feel dry and itchy after the pool enjoyment, apply a pea-sized amount of the lube on your vaginal opening. Pro tip: use it to add zing to your next pleasure sesh–with or without bae.

Pool sex can be all fun and games if you practice caution. If you want to avoid these risks altogether, you can enjoy some foreplay in the pool and then carry on in bed or on the poolside. Safe and smart, right?
