What’s The Meaning of Your Favourite Beauty Brand? Find Out Here!

I know that you love your beauty brands to bits, but do you know the meaning of their names? Probably not. Why don’t you hop into our beauty school bus and allow us to take you on an educational trip? We bet that after you learn each brand’s meaning, you’ll never look at them the same way. In fact, you’ll only grow fonder of them. You’ll come to realise that there is a story, passion for the brand and a whole lot of thought been put into naming each one. Let’s start scrolling, shall we?  

1. M.A.C

Which girl doesn’t already own a Ruby Woo lipstick, right? Almost everyone who’s gaga about M.A.C has the shade! M.A.C aka Makeup Art Cosmetics was created by a beauty salon owner, Frank Angelo and photographer, Frank Toskan, in 1984. Initially, their products were made available to only celebrities and industry professionals. However, it’s a different story today. Anyone can visit this makeup store and shop.

2. NARS Cosmetics

The NARS blush orgasm palette is to die for! It’s a cosmetic and skincare company that was founded in 1994 by makeup artist and photographer François Nars. Who would have thought about that, right?

3. NYX Professional Makeup

NYX Professional Makeup is not pronounced as N-Y-X, but ‘NIX‘ or ‘niks’ at one go. The cosmetic giant was founded in L.A by Toni Ko and is named after the Greek goddess of the night (also the symbol of both beauty and power).

4. Maybelline New York

Maybelline New York has an interesting story to tell. The company was started in 1915 by a 19-year-old entrepreneur named Thomas Lyle Williams. One fine day, Thomas noticed that his elder sister named Mabel mixing coal dust and Vaseline to make her lashes and brows look bolder and darker. That’s when her brother had an idea. He later changed the name of the company from Maybell Laboratories to Maybelline (which basically means, a combination of his sister’s name, Mabel and Vaseline) *Mindblown*

5. O.P.I

You’ll never believe OPI’s story if we told it to you. The name has nothing to do with nails. On the contrary, it means, Odontorium Products Inc. Before they started focusing on nail polishes, the company used to supply dental products. A little pricey as compared to other nail polishes, but the quality is mint.

6. Lancôme

Sounds so French, right? In fact, the brand is a French luxury perfume and a cosmetic house that distributes makeup worldwide. It has an interesting brand name because of its story. While Lancôme’s founder Armand Petitjean was vacationing in France. He visited the ruins of Château de Lancosme and fell in love with it. While he was there, he also spotted yellow flowers that served as inspiration when he was creating his brand’s emblem – the flower.

7. Nivea

From your grandparents to your parents and now you, the brand has grown with every generation. Nivea gets its name from a Latin word called ‘niveus’ which basically means snow-white. That’s the colour of their creams till today.

8. Shiseido 

Shiseido is one the world’s most popular and oldest beauty brands. It was founded in 1872 and is available only in selected makeup stores. The Japanese brand got its name from the Chinese Yi Jing, the book of changes from the four books and five classics of Confucianism. Known for its minimal yet aesthetic packaging, their products have stolen the hearts of millions of beauty mavens.

9. Lakmé

Be it skincare or makeup, Lakmé is one of the most trusty brands out there. Named after the French opera, Lakmé, it’s derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Lakshmi’ which means Goddess of wealth and beauty. The Indian cosmetic brand is currently owned by Hindustan Unilever.
