Mehrauli: How The Destination Is Evolving Into A Bridal Shopper’s Paradise!

Wedding season may be over, but not for those getting married in the coming year. While the band-baaja-baraat period only commences again in fall, the arrangements and shopping take up almost a year. It’s surprising how happy the ‘to-be’s look on D-day, considering the hours of shopping, stressing and tantrums they push through to get there. Well, all’s well that ends well, they say.

The perfect wedding rests on a few fundamental pillars – the venue, the decor and, most important, the ensemble. The jewellery and the bridal garment takes months, and sometimes, more, to find and finalise. So it’s only natural that you visit and consult the best designers in the country for the same. And New Delhi is where most of them are present. The best Indian designers for bridal ensembles and trousseau are scattered all over South Delhi. But Mehrauli is where you should be, especially if you’re short on time.

The Kila at Mehrauli

With The Kila, Qutab Garden, Ambawatta One and Qutub Boulevard all located here, the Mehrauli neighbourhood has become a bridal favourite. With good reason, that too – with over 17 stores to browse and choose from, there’s a slim chance you’ll leave Mehrauli empty-handed. From Sabyasachi to Manish Malhotra, there are enough options to satisfy the sartorial desires of every bride-to-be and her family. Here are some new must-visit designer stores that have set up shop in Mehrauli recently:

Aza

The newest addition the Mehrauli designer bunch, multi-designer retailer, Aza, opened its doors early in March, this year. Apart from having “a fresh assortment of contemporary bridal and occasion wear from over 50 of India’s leading and upcoming designers”, the store has now added a carefully selected range of handcrafted clutches and jewellery from Isharya, Outhouse and Valliyan among others.

Why Mehrauli? Founder, Dr Alka Nishak recognises that “Mehrauli is fast becoming the new destination of choice for the bridal shopper. We want to set the benchmark higher for an unparalleled customer experience.” The store also houses exclusive lines designed by the likes of Abraham & Thakore, Arjun Saluja and Sahil Kochhar.

Payal Singhal

India’s leading print designer Payal Singhal opened her first ever Delhi store at Mehrauli in December last year. The 9900 sq ft store offers the modern bride a range of bridal options, but also beyond. Browse through their transitional occasion and day wear for the array of wedding functions that precede the wedding day.

The store lends a beautiful backdrop to Payal’s collection. It is “classic with a vintage deco-vibe. We have distressed mirror walls with pale pink velvet Art Deco furniture and soft gold accents.”

Tarun Tahiliani

One of India’s leading couturiers, Tarun Tahiliani is the stuff brides dream of at night. The Indian designer’s flagship bridal and couture store is a sprawling 12,000 sq ft area, with two floors of pure sartorial heaven. “When you walk into my space, I want you to know you’re entering my mind,” he says. An artist, rather than a designer, Tahiliani chose Mehrauli for his new flagship. With his new store at Qutab Garden at Mehrauli, his quest for “an Indian modernity has found an elegant utterance.”

The range consists of custom made bridal and occasion wear, as well as ready-to-wear for both women and men; signature handbags, clutches, and jewellery, plus limited-edition high-end jewellery pieces by Srihari Diagems for Tarun Tahiliani.

Varun Bahl

Mehrauli also became home to Varun Bahl’s new flagship store, back in December 2017. The Indian designer, known for his exquisite traditional bridal attire gave the Art Nouveau theme to his Qutab-adjacent store. He chose the location owing to its old world charm and aura of grandeur.

Apart from his designs, the store offers today’s brides-to-be custom bridal wear and also planning services with their events subsidiary, Aurumn by Varun Bahl. If you want your wedding decor and ensembles to have a deeper connection, this is where you should be.

The Indian fashion designer is best known for his western pret range, but his couture showcases at the last few fashion weeks have impressed as well. His latest couture collection, Parizaad, features intricate embroidery in pristine shades of white and cream and is available at his new flagship store at Mehrauli.

Inspired by well-light Parisian stores, the store is essentially a cube dressed in all-white, to bring all the attention to the well-deserving range of bridal and occasion wear.
