7 Celeb Couples Who Shattered Stereotypes At Their Wedding

Indian weddings are more than just celebrating two people and two families coming together. They are also a way to honour our customs, rituals, and age-old traditions. However, celebrity weddings have always been a step ahead, be it about spending lavishly or setting the trends for upcoming shaadis. But this time, I found something even more interesting!

Besides giving us major wedding inspo, Bollywood celebs have also often shattered stereotypes and taken a step away from regressive customs. Let’s take a look:

Dia Mirza – Female Priestess & No To Platsic

Dia Mirza and Viabhav Rekhi’s wedding was anything but conventional. The couple decided to take a sustainable route by hosting their wedding at Dia’s Bandra residence. They went minimal on the decor and opted for natural and biodegradable materials. Dia wore a red handloom saree and ditched the expensive heavy lehenga. Further, she said no to the traditional vidaai and kanyadaan. But the highlight of their shaadi was the women priest who conducted their wedding rituals. Instead of a male priest, they choose a priestess, Sheela Atta, to perform the ceremony.

Katrina Kaif – Sisters Holding Phoolo Ki Chadar

Katrina Kaif found the man of her dreams in Vicky Kushal and in 2021 they tied the knot. Not only did Kat marry a younger man, but she also shattered another stereotype at her wedding. Instead of her brothers, it was her sisters who held her bridal phoolon ki chadar. Sharing the pic on her Instagram, she wrote, “Growing up, we sisters always protected each other. They are my pillars of strength and we keep each other grounded… May it always stay that way!

Purab Kohli – Got Married After Becoming A Dad

In India, marrying after giving birth is still taboo. However, actor Purab Kohli didn’t let this get to him. Purab and his now-wife, Lucy Payton, decided to get hitched two years after their daughter was born. Talking about his decision in an interview, Kohli once said, “We always wanted to get married, but didn’t want to rush into it. When Inaya was going to come into this world, it was a glorious moment by itself, and we didn’t want to dilute that by suddenly rushing into marriage.

Rajkumar Rao – Applied Sindoor

After dating for 11 years, actor Rajkumar Rao and Patralekhaa tied the knot in a beautiful intimate ceremony. While many pics and videos left their fans gushing, a particular gesture by Rajkumar won many hearts. After applying sindoor on Patralekhaa’s forehead, he asked his wife to apply sindoor on him as well. Typically, Indian women wear sindoor as a sign of devotion towards their husbands.

Suhasini Mulay – Got Married At 60

If you still believe that there’s a right age to get married, then you need to think again. Popular actress Suhasini broke stereotypes by tying the knot to physicist Atul Gurtu at the age of 60. Atul was a widower, who lost his wife to cancer after 36 years of marriage. Suhasini, on the other hand, was never married but was in a long live-in-relation in the 90s. After being single for 20 years, Suhani found love again.

Anand Tiwari – Cried At The Wedding

Boys do cry and it’s the normal thing to do! Actor Anand Tiwari tied the knot with actress Angira Dhar in an intimate ceremony. But while Angira couldn’t stop smiling, Anand got super emotional and couldn’t control his tears. Sharing the post, Angira wrote, “You know you are in the right hands when it’s not you who’s tearing up at the विदाई.”

Not only this. Anand even applied mehendi and got his wife’s name written in the design. How cute!

Niyanti Joshi – Flaunted Her Grey Hair

There are checklists that exist for how a bride should look on her wedding day. But Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Dilip Joshi’s daughter, Niayti, didn’t go by it! At her traditional Gujarati wedding, Niyati proudly flaunted her naturally grey hair. Her move was a bold choice and I applaud her for not letting the conventional standards of beauty define her.

Weddings should be all about the couple tying the knot and what they believe in. Kudos to these couples for keeping it real!
