Celebrating diversity is the new cool in the beauty industry and not acknowledging that brilliance would be a despicable move.
There is no limit to how diverse beauty can be. Recently, a revolution of sorts began through Fenty Beauty’s dark foundation shades followed by Huda Beauty’s foundation line. We recently saw the vitiligo and albino dolls created by a talented artist Kay Black and with the feedback received, there was no doubt on how wonderful it feels to be rightfully represented. This time Wet N Wild is taking the torch ahead in their “Breaking Beauty” campaign.
The cosmetics brand cast five gorgeous faces for the campaign including Diandra Forrest, an African-American model and actor with albinism. This is the first time a model with albinism is fronting a major beauty launch. “I wanted albino people to see a face for them, someone who can represent them,” Forrest shared in an interview with Refinery29.
She has walked at the New York Fashion Week, has been a part of magazine covers and has acted in the movie Afronauts. She has made her diversity her strength and why not? After all, she comes from a family which has members of “every shade, from the lightest to the darkest,” says Forrest.
In this campaign, she is joined by transgender model Valentijn de Hingh, Asian-American musician Michelle Zauner, Olympic weightlifter turned model Briana Marquez and cancer survivor and amputee activist Mama Cāx.
Models with albinism had always been marketed as "mythical" or "otherworldly," in the fashion industry and the Breaking Beauty campaign seems to be breaking that norm. Something Forrest wanted to do since her childhood.
Wet N Wild has, in fact, made the shades that work on Forrest’s skin eliminating the process of mixing and matching. “They're the perfect shades. When I showed up on set, I felt so comfortable. I'm always like, 'Will they have my shade? Will it look correct?' I always have to mix. The shade is either too dark or too pale. But Wet n Wild made me feel so beautiful,” as Forrest shared in her interview. We can’t wait to witness a beauty campaign this diverse in India.
