Celebrities, Designers & Supermodels Bid Adieu To Karl Lagerfeld, The Original Wizard Of Fashion

Karl Lagerfeld, design maestro and the most prolific designer of his time died at the age of 85 in Paris yesterday. Words fall short to define the genius that was Lagerfeld. Helming the luxury fashion houses, Chanel since 1983 and Fendi since 1965, whilst also looking over his eponymous fashion label couldn't have been an easy task, but Karl Lagerfeld did it with what seemed like effortless ease.

“Please don’t say I work hard. Nobody is forced to do this job, and if they don’t like it they should do another one. People buy dresses to be happy, not to hear about somebody who suffered over a piece of taffeta,” he famously stated in an interview to The Independent

Having won the International Woolmark Prize in 1954 and working with design heavyweights such as Pierre Balmain, Jean Patou, Chloé, Ballantyne and many more in his career spanning decades, Karl Lagerfeld did what he loved till the end: design. It's not just his interpretations of fashion that will be missed. Over the years, his famous and outrageous quotes gave him the status of a man who never held back.

Celebrities and supermodels he worked with over the years, along with fashion houses and designers he inspired, took to Instagram to pay their tributes to the man who defined fashion in the 20th and 21st century.

Gigi Hadid

Karl, I will miss your indescribable presence, watching your calm, quiet, genius mind working, your little jokes, amazing stories, and experiencing the clothes, sets, and productions only you could dream up. Thank you for believing in me and for the beautiful, incredible opportunities you brought to my career, but mostly, thank you for giving me the honor of knowing the magic behind the myth. There will never be another Karl Lagerfeld. I am overwhelmed with sadness today, but also with so much love, admiration, and gratitude for you. To all his beloved friends and colleagues, and his favorite girl Choupette🐾, my heart is with you. ❤️ Rest In Peace King Karl. I didn’t want this day to come. 💔

Cher Karl, que dire pour exprimer à quel point vous allez nous manquer. The world will never know another force like you. My heart is so heavy today, but so full of gratitude for all that you have taught and done for me. Your kindness, humour, and loyalty will live on in the hearts of those who knew you and your genius will live on forever. I feel so lucky to have been able to work with you so closely, but even luckier to have known your heart and incredible spirit. I will hold every moment spent with you so dear. Words can’t express how much your belief in me has impacted every aspect of my life; it is a gift I could never thank you enough for. You truly made my dreams come true. After my first campaign you were asked on French television what you thought of me and you said you would have to meet me to truly know. I sent the interview to my French girl friend to translate and was elated you knew of my existence. Years later during fashion week in Paris you and your family walked into the restaurant my team and i were in and sat at the table next to us. All i could do was stare as this legend was sitting an arm stretch away. I got up and walked passed your table only to go to the bathroom and check my hair before strutting to your table and introducing myself. You told me you knew who i was and that the grace i walked with reminded you of a young Naomi Campbell. Wow.. those words will ring in my head forever and they tell me that no matter what i need to continue working hard for my dreams. I’m happy i got to know what you thought of me. You’re greatly missed. I’m honoured to have ever been in your presence. Sending my love to the Lagerfeld family, you’re in my prayers 🙏🏽💔

Leading designer and fashion houses too, joined in saying their goodbyes to Lagerfeld. The house of Dior wrote a moving note, touching upon stories and how there wouldn't be another like him. All of us at the House of Dior are deeply saddened by news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing. He will be greatly missed by everyone in the fashion world. Pietro Beccari, Chairman and CEO of Christian Dior Couture, said: “Karl has been for me and my wife much more than just someone I worked with. He entered our life as a tornado and we became friends. Many words will be said about his talent and genius, but I would like to single out his profound culture. Indeed, you could speak with him for hours about any subject and he always had his well-informed point of view. He had an immense sensibility and he behaved like a gentleman with all the teams and at every level. Karl had an enormous generosity with the people he loved. We feel gifted to have met him on our path and deeply honored to be his friend. The huge sorrow will not, in any way, take away the incredible memories and moments we shared together. How to forget the first Haute Couture show of Fendi in Paris, the Trevi Fountain show and his eyes the first time he entered our new offices at Palazzo della Civiltà. He was a giant and I do not think there will be anybody like him anymore. He leaves a huge empty gap in the world of fashion and we will miss him a lot.”
