Mumbai witnessed the dark side of mother nature on 29th August, 2017, as the monsoons brought forth heavy rainfall, bringing the metropolis to a complete standstill. The citizens came together, as one body, to help everyone in need and it was humanity at its best that saved lives and showed love at the time of a disaster.
Among these kind samaritans were the brave women of Mumbai, who didn’t think twice before going beyond their duties to lend a hand to the helpless. Some heroes don’t wear capes, and these women are just few examples among the thousands that ventured out into the storm and proved this right.
1. “We let the people in, served them food and let them dry.” – Pinky, House Help
“We were at Thane when the rain got very bad. We could not come back to Deonar (where we live) because trains and roads were blocked. Our madam said we should all serve food to people who were stuck outside. So we let the people in, served them food and let them dry. We had a house full of very kind people and we fed them all.”
2. “We were up all night helping those worse off than we were.” – Maithili Seth, HR Administrative Officer
“I was stuck at Vidyavihar and soaked to the bone. I saw groups of people gathered around and gathering supplies to distribute it to those whose houses had collapsed in the rain. I joined them, and we were up all night helping those worse off than we were. I’m not a hero, just someone who realised that helping someone is always an option, no matter how miserable the circumstances are.”
3. “Three of us went around reassuring women in our train compartment, giving them our phones and sharing our food all around.” – Neha Joshi, Business Management Student
“We were stuck in a train and scared half to death because it was the 26th July floods all over again. But a lot of women in the compartments were panicking and crying because they couldn’t contact their families and they were worried. Three of us went around reassuring them, giving them our phones and sharing our food all around. It got much better after that”
4. “I had over 30 people in my home and unlimited chai for anyone who needed it.” – Ayesha Sundareshan, Housewife
“Nobody stays out in the rain if I can help it! So what if they’re not my kids or not my relatives? Insaaniyat naam ki cheez toh hai na? I had over 30 people in my home and unlimited chai for anyone who needed it. We all stayed up all night and made friends!”
5. “All the nurses stayed behind and attended to those who were drenched and stranded outside, with nowhere to go.” – Milly Joseph, Nurse
“We didn’t have too many casualties, but it was necessary to give them all a place to stay out from the rain. All the nurses stayed behind and attended to those who were drenched and stranded outside, with nowhere to go. We aren’t heroes. It’s our duty, as human beings.”
We salute these women and the citizens of Mumbai who stepped up and led everyone by example on what it means to be true superheroes!
