Dear Will Smith, A Distasteful Joke Doesn’t Entitle You To Assault Chris Rock

Like all the cinephiles around the world, we were waiting for this year’s Academy Awards like children waiting for Christmas morning. But nothing prepared us for the fiasco that took place at the ceremony, and we bet everyone who watched it is still in shock. This year, Will Smith had his golden moment as an Oscar winner but it came with a lot of controversies. Before the actor took to the stage to accept the Academy Award, he shocked fans everywhere by slapping comedian Chris Rock.

The stand-up comedian appeared on stage to present the Oscar for documentary feature and made a joke about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith for being in G.I. Jane. It was a shocking remark on Jada in an apparent reference to her shaved hairdo—which is a result of her suffering from a hair loss condition called alopecia.

Will instantly lost his cool and took to the stage to slap Rock. Initially, it appeared to be a joke at first, but then he returned to his seat and yelled at the presenter, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”

No matter what the situation, is violence is never the answer. Period. Even though Rock’s comment was distasteful and crude, Will’s reaction to it was honestly concerning. He not only disrespected the Academy, but he also didn’t let his partner Jada get the space to process the remark.

Will Smith’s Apologies

Right after the unfortunate incident, the actor walked to accept his first Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard. In his emotional speech soon after, a tearful Will Smith apologised to the Academy. He said, “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things.”

Well Will, love can’t be an excuse for harming someone! There are boundaries that you just don’t cross, and we hope the actor understands the gravity of his actions and owns up to them.
