The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has banned mobile phones and their use in colleges and universities in the northern state. The blanket ban, meaning a complete state-wide ban, has been issued by the Directorate of Higher Education in UP and is applicable to students as well as the teaching faculty. The aim of the circular issued is to ensure ‘better teaching environment for students across all colleges and universities in the state’.
In addition to the already existing ban on the use of mobile phones during official meetings, including Cabinet meetings, the CM has extended the ban on colleges and universities as well. While the former decision was taken after some ministers and officers were found using WhatsApp during important meetings, the latter has been enforced after observing how students, as well as teachers, are spending a large amount of their time on mobile phones during college hours.
