“True love mein kuch na kuch siyappa toh ho hi jata hai…”
Bollywood has often used gay characters as comic relief (remember KJo’s Dostana?), until Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s portrayal of Sweety in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. Sonam’s character marked a significant moment for LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream films. With an unconventional tale of finding love and acceptance, the movie brings homosexuality out of the closet.
The story’s track of a father coming to terms with the sexuality and the suppressed emotions of his daughter is quite endearing. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga puts forth a progressive message of the true and liberating nature of love. Inspired by the movie, Flashing Lights Photography captured a beautiful photoshoot of an Indian lesbian couple on their wedding day.
These stunning photos celebrate the love and joy that partnership can bring. It also proves that two brides are better than one! *wink*
This shoot has been trending all over social media with the hashtag #letlovebe. The design team shared these pictures on Instagram with the caption, “The concept behind this shoot was inspired by ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ – a 2019 Bollywood film that tastefully showcased a female + female love story for the first time in Hindi cinema. Although there have been a few movies which have briefly displayed a same-sex relationship as humour or taboo, this movie deserved a round of applause for tackling the subject for what it was – #letlovebe. Times are changing and WE ARE HERE FOR IT! Here’s to a progressive mindset, fearing people’s perceptions a little less and accepting each other a little more! Thank you to everyone who was a part of this vision.”
This vision was brought to life by Maureen Bhullar, a Bollywood fan, who conceptualised the entire shoot. She claims that Bollywood and fashion are her creative outlets, and her Instagram bio reads: “I need a nap because smashing the patriarchy and performing Bollywood songs in my bedroom is exhausting.”
This progressive photoshoot deserves everybody’s attention. Seems like the change we wanted to see is finally here!
