Knowledge Is Power: This Is The Right Way To Look After Your Makeup Brushes

Makeup is an art, and makeup brushes are your weapons. Treat them well, and they will serve you for a long time. Regardless of the quality and brand of the makeup brush, handling them carelessly will take a toll on the bristles and shape. Unkept makeup brushes are more likely to gather dust, dirt and harbour bacteria. Since all good things, unfortunately, come to an end, there will be a time when your makeup brushes will give way. Before that happens, here’s the correct way to take care of your makeup brushes.

Unlike beauty products, makeup brushes do not come with a shelf-life. Their future boils down to these three things–how you clean, store and use them. Let’s talk about cleaning makeup brushes. Number one, do not soak them in a bowl of makeup remover solution or wash them under plain running water. Once a week wet your makeup brushes with lukewarm water and then, place a drop of mild cleanser into your palm.

In slow, circular motions, massage the bristles into your palm, rinse the bristles with lukewarm water. Use a clean towel to squeeze out excess water from the bristles. Place the makeup brush at the edge of a table or counter and allow it to air-dry. This cleansing method will prevent the bristles from bending and losing shape too.

The next part is learning how to store them. Pick any place where it is dark and dry. You can keep them in brush holders, candle jars or stackable drawers–it’s up to you. However, make sure the brush’s bristles do not make contact with other makeup products, wet surfaces or makeup brushes. Mistakes like these can cause bacteria build-up and dirt to collect in and around the bristles.

Now that you know how to clean and store your makeup brushes – let’s talk about what to keep in mind when using them. Applying too much pressure while applying makeup will damage the bristles of the makeup brush. This application technique will destroy the brush’s shape and texture. Also, never use dirty brushes on the skin. They are most likely to be contaminated with product residue, sweat and dirt. Using dirty makeup brushes aren’t safe for the skin, and this makes application spotty and tiresome.

You’ll know when it’s time to let go of your makeup brushes when they start to look a little rough and out of shape. If you don’t want to throw them away, you can find another purpose for it. You can use old makeup brushes to clean tiny knick-knacks or your laptop keyboard. If you have more such cool ideas to use makeup brushes, do share!
