The Mane Event: How Hair Stole The Show At Fashion Week

Fashion Week Hair Trends You Can Actually Wear Everyday / Tressed to Impress: Fashion Week’s Best Hair Moments

When it comes to hair and makeup, fashion week is not where the general public goes for inspiration. The star of the show is the outfit, and everything else is usually accompaniment – but I personally believe that the art of a good outfit lies in curating every element of the ensemble until it flows seamlessly. How you do your hair can make or break an outfit.

As I explored my way through this season, my first one on ground, there was a lot of pomp, a lot of show, and great designs – but what caught my eye was the unique use of hair and hair accessories to make an impact. While there were a lot of trends that anyone with a keen eye and basic knowledge could predict (the slick back bun, voluminous waves) there were also a lot of novel looks that set the tone for the rest of the day. Here are a few of my personal favs and a few I think would make you the talk of the party.

Side Partings Are Making A Comeback!

If there’s one trend that’s made a heavy comeback this season, it’s the infamous and quite frankly, dreaded side parting. From ages 13 to 17 this side parting was my go-to hairstyle, my entire personality; it had me in a chokehold on me and everyone around me hated it, so I’m returning the favour and hating on it now. On these models it looks classy and sophisticated, but on a pre-pubescent teen? Not so much.

Headscarves For The Win!

Now one of my favourite editorial looks on front covers and on the runway is good use of a headscarf/ This is one of those looks that’s always in style because of the multitude of variations it allows. It’s not that hard to get right and if you nail it, it can really take your look to new heights.

Exaggerated Versions Of Basic Hair Accessories

The hair accessory trend has always been a fan favourite – from the butterfly clips to the bows and flowers, each brings its own panache to the table. But a predominant trend on the runway this fashion week took from the books of Carrie Bradshaw’s dead bird almost wedding ensemble. Exaggerated, embellished clips and hairbands were probably my favourite part of the Sejal Kamdar and Valliyan shows.

Formal Veils: Short And Long

A surprising trend that shone on the runway this season was the elegant and frankly, quite surprising use of veils. If not done properly, adding a veil to your everyday look can make the whole fit seem like one fit for an underdressed bride, especially if you. But Charu and Vasundhara, INCA and Akaaro all managed to make it look deliciously sophisticated if not extremely integral to the entire vibe.

The Celebrity-Approved Slick Back Bun

As we all know by this point, the slick back bun is an audience favourite and hardly ever goes out of style. It works when you have greasy hair, doesn’t require too much thought and usually gives a rather refined edge to the overall attire; no wonder it’s the go to look for most of our generation’s IT Girls.

Hair That Looks Wet But Isn’t

One of the first people I saw in this look was Deepika Padukone, quite a few years ago and since then I’ve been seeing it everywhere. A modern chic hairstyle that makes you look like you’ve just exited a body of water can be hard to achieve but if you learn how to do it, it definitely qualifies as an outfit saver. Kim Kardashian did it best but the models on the Deme and Anamika Khanna runway were a close second.

The Classic, Voluminous Waves

A timeless look that has been seen on and off the runway time and time again is effortless, voluminous waves; honestly, it’s not even a trend, just a way of life. Voluminous waves tend to be one of the easiest looks to wear, especially if you have already have some kind of natural wave to your hair.

Big, Big Barrettes

A regal take on the classic barrette, this is no ordinary clip. Embellished, shiny and the last accessory you need to bring an outfit together in 2024. It’s simple, classic and very easy to style – you can dress it up or down according to the kind of vibe you’ll be creating.

Slightly Coloured Hair

As one of the most unique trends to be showcased on the runway this season, slightly coloured hair is now a thing. No, I don’t mean highlights – this is a different kind of colouring where you only colour either the top of the head or the tips to match your fit. Kind of strange but honestly, with the advancement in semi-permanent colours, very achievable and sartorial.

While makeup may have taken a backseat this season, the hairstyles and accessories more than make up for it. A rich tapestry of doable ideas and inspiration, I hope this helps you plan your next show stopping look with more ease.
