Should You Apply Sunscreen Even When You’re At Home? Here’s Everything To Know!

With so many articles on the Internet emphasizing the need to apply SPF daily, you must have wondered at least once, “do I need to apply sunscreen at home?” It’s only fair to ask that question considering sunscreens are marketed to protect you from the damaging UV rays of the sun. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you only need to apply sunscreen if you step out of your house. Your skin may still be susceptible to UV radiation from sunlight through your windows, balconies, or terraces. Which brings us to the question- should we apply sunscreen at home? The answer is YES! We all need to be using SPF even when we’re indoors.

You must already know that spending extended periods of time outdoors sans sunscreen can cause sunburns. However, repeated exposure without sunscreen can do more damage than just that. It can lead to premature signs of ageing such as discoloration, wrinkles, fine lines, and can also cause skin cancer. While UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn, it’s the UVA rays that contribute mainly to skin issues such as wrinkles, pigmentation, and photo-ageing.

What you need to know is that the sunlight coming into your house through windows is enough to expose your skin to UVA rays. UVA rays can reach you even when you’re indoors since they have a longer wavelength than the UVB rays, and can get through clouds and windows. So, should you apply sunscreen at home? Yes, it is advisable to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen even when you are indoors. Especially if you spend a lot of time on your balcony or sitting by the window soaking up the sun.

How Often Should You Apply Sunscreen When You’re At Home?

When at home, you should be applying sunscreen to exposed skin at least once a day. The frequency, however, depends on how exposed you are to the sunrays coming through the windows. If the exposure is not too much, you may not require a second application. However, you might need to reapply after a workout during the day, or if you take a shower after your daily chores.

Should I Wash Off The Sunscreen At Night If I Apply Sunscreen Indoors?

Now that you know that you should apply sunscreen at home, the next obvious question would be whether you should wash off the sunscreen at night. Any residual sunscreen on your skin will coagulate with the dirt or debris on your skin and clog your pores. Just like removing your makeup before sleeping is essential, getting rid of the sunscreen before you go to bed is also important. Besides, if your sunscreen does not have moisturizing properties, it will end up making your skin feel dry. Hence it’s always a good idea to wash off the sunscreen at night.

While there are many ways to remove sunscreen from the face, you can try double cleansing, or using a cleansing balm to effectively wash off any residual sunscreen.

It’s a little-known fact that radiations other than those emitted by the sun also affect the health of your skin. If you are someone who spends a lot of time in front of computer screens, you might want to consider investing in a good mineral sunscreen to protect yourself from the blue light or HEV (High Energy Visible) light radiated by electronic devices such as cellphones, laptop screens, televisions, etc.

Prolonged exposure to blue light may lead to premature skin ageing, collagen breakdown and skin damage. So, should you apply sunscreen at home to save your skin against blue light damage? Well, mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide can not only help you block UV rays of the sun, but also blue light to some extent.

We hope we have convinced you to apply sunscreen even when you’re indoors!
