Have you heard the song Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara? If not, go listen to it now. It talks about how we all want to be ‘beautiful’ and end up comparing ourselves to the most myopic beauty standards that the world sets out for us. It talks to girls who almost want to be ‘sculpted by the sculptor’ and who starve themselves to fit into molds that highlight only one type of beauty.
However, the song, later on, says, “To all the girls that’s hurting, let me be your mirror, help you see a little bit clearer, the light that shines within. You’re beautiful just the way you are. And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart. No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful.”
This is exactly what Selena Gomez encompasses.
She has been a mental health adequate and an inspiration to young women worldwide to embrace who they really are- their skin, their scars, their beauty, their magic. Her beauty brand even has a Rare Impact Fund, which will get one percent of all the brand’s sales. And the goal is to raise $100 million over the next ten years to directly benefit “mental health services, with a focus on underserved communities.”
Wow Selena, take a bow.
In a recent Instagram post, the singer-songwriter set a new example of embracing her scars by posting a picture in her swimsuit showing off her post-surgery marks.
She opened up about her journey towards self-acceptance in the caption, saying, “When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through…and I’m proud of that.”
The Fetish singer received a kidney transplant from her friend and Grown-ish star, Francia Raisa in 2017 after experiencing complications from her lupus diagnosis. She first showed off her scars in front of the paparazzi in 2018 and has been an inspiration to all of us ever since.
Gomez teaches us an important lesson- all bodies are beautiful and that’s something we should all hold onto.
More power to you Selena! May you continue to fight against stringent beauty norms and fight for mental health awareness. The world is a happier and more accepting place for it!
