Instagram Is Obsessed With Retinol Sandwiching – Should You Be, Too?

Without exception, every beauty insider we have ever talked to has told us to use retinol ( aka retinoids, Retin-A, retinoids). Whether we’re asking for advice on dealing with uneven skin tone, dullness, fine lines, oily skin, acne, or just how to up our glow game, they’ll always name-drop this bomb ingredient and insist that retinol is the answer to all our skin concerns. Think of it as the Beyonce of the skincare world – a skincare superstar.

The gold-standard ingredient, however, can also be harsh on the skin because of its efficacy. It can lead to dryness, uncomfortable tingling, irritation, and peeling. The vitamin A derivative is not well-tolerated by a large swath of the population, but it’s totally #WorthIt for the long-term results. So today, we’re going to introduce you to the latest skincare technique doing rounds on Instagram. Enters: Retinol sandwiching. The technique will let you reap the benefits of this do-it-all ingredient without any of the potential side effects. To know what the process entails and why it might be the key to incorporating this beloved ingredient into your beauty routine, keep scrolling!

The 411 On Retinol Sandwich

The technique involves applying a layer of moisturiser, then slathering a retinol product on top of it, and applying the moisturiser again over the layer of retinol. This helps to sparge the potency of retinol while giving your skin the much-needed moisture to avoid potential side effects. The reduction in potency helps your skin slowly get used to the active ingredient. All in all, retinol sandwiches are a way to let your skin ease into using the ingredients rather than a long-term technique. Once your skin becomes used to the ingredient, you can enjoy the anti-aging benefits of retinol. Ahead, we’re listing down the step-by-step guide to trying the retinol sandwich technique.

How To Do The Retinol Sandwich Method

Step 1: Use A Gentle Cleanser

Apply a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser to clean your face. It should be free from active ingredients such as AHA and BHAs. Gently pat dry, avoid rubbing!

Step 2: Apply Oil-Free Moisturiser

Apply a thin layer of moisturiser to your squeaky-clean skin. Make sure the moisturiser is free from actives and is non-oily. Let the moisturiser sink into the skin to ensure it’s absorbed properly before you apply the retinol.

Step 3: Apply Retinol

Give the moisturiser about 30 seconds to really sink in. Next, apply high-quality retinol over your moisturiser. Avoid applying it to sensitive areas on the face like corners of the mouth, around the nostrils, and the delicate eye area. If you’re a beginner, start slow and aim for 2 – 3 times a week and monitor your skin. Ensure you don’t use it on wounds, sunburned, or scaly areas.

Step 4: Re-Apply Moisturiser

Wait for another 30 seconds, then re-apply another layer of moisturiser on top. Keep in mind to apply SPF every single day if you’re using retinol.

You glow girl!
