  • Hormonal changes: Due to pregnancy, menopause, thyroid, or other hormonal problems
  • Medical conditions: Alopecia areata or patchy baldness is one such condition in which one experiences hair loss on any part of the body, especially the scalp and lashes
  • Scalp infections
  • Stress
  • Excessive hairstyling: Using hot tools too often on hair

“The best thing you can do is avoid blow dryers and let your hair dry naturally,” explains Dr Viral Desai. Overusing hot tools on your hair can cause serious damage and breakage. Plus the constant tugging and tension don’t help your strands either. High temperatures also take a toll on hair health and weaken hair. If air-drying your hair leaves it looking frizzy, simply dab in some smoothening serum.

Essential Oils Work On Hair Too

Dr Desai strongly advocates the use of essential oils to promote and boost hair growth. Oils like cedarwood, rosemary, and lavender have been tried and tested for years and these can help restore your scalp health. They have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory powers that stimulate the scalp and increases circulation, keeping flakiness and irritation at bay. Consequentially, you will end up scratching your mane less often, reducing breakage.

Always make sure you dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before applying them topically on your scalp. These oils are way too potent and will immediately cause irritation.

Fix Your Diet

What you eat shows up on your hair and skin so make sure you are loading up on healthy foods. “Eat plenty of leafy greens, nuts, beans, fish, and lean meat. These are all important because they are rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12,” explains Dr Desai.

Don’t Stress

This might seem easier said than done but stress does some real damage. Losing hair due to stress can take up to eight months to start regrowing so it is best you manage it while you can. Take a deep breathe, meditate, journal, or dance it out, whatever works for you.

When it comes to skin and hair care, the most important thing, along with making the aforementioned changes is to be patient. Results take time, sometimes even up to three months. Remember, the name of the game is patience!
