So you are taking the next step in your life and are finally moving out of your parent’s house. You are hunting for an apartment and are looking for a flatmate to share the house with. If you are on this boat, chances are you must have heard countless horror roommate stories; and it is true. Some people have a terrible experience when they are sharing their apartment with someone.
To save yourself the horror, we have compiled a list of 22 essential questions that you should ask a potential flatmate before you sign that rent agreement paper.
1. What are your food preferences and are you comfortable with non-vegetarian food being cooked in the house?
2. Do you want to keep separate utensils for non-vegetarian food?
3. Should we have our separate utensils or are you comfortable with sharing plates, bowls, mugs, spoons, etc?
4. Should we hire a house help or do you want to split chores and save costs?
5. What expenses are we going to share and how?
6. Are we going to rent or buy the necessary furniture for the house? (Make sure that you split the expenses)
7. Are we going to share our groceries or should we get them separately?
8. What do you do for a living?
9. Are you a full-time employee or do you freelance?
10. Do you work from home, or hybrid, or on-site?
11. When will you pay the rent – on 1st, 10th, or the last week of the month?
12. Will you be comfortable if I keep a pet at home?
13. Can I smoke in the house or should we have a designated spot?
14. Should we take turns in emptying out the dustbin?
15. We should take turns in cleaning our washrooms. Who is going to clean first?
16. Do you play music loudly on your Bluetooth speakers?
17. Do you travel a lot – personally and professionally?
18. How often are your friends going to crash at our place?
19. Are you comfortable with me calling a few of my friends over for food and drinks?
20. Are you comfortable with me having my boyfriend come over?
21. Are you comfortable with me having my parents come over?
22. Are you an introvert, extrovert, or an ambivert?
