With the advent of Candy Crush and Temple Run, nobody even looks up from their screens when the electricity goes off. And sometimes you don’t even realize it’s gone thanks to 24-hour power-back-up and inverters and stuff! But remember how as kids we used to immediately jump and scream “Ohhhhhh!!” as soon as there was a power cut? Here are a few gems from those days when load-shedding batti gul meant a whole lot of fun, masti and gossip!
1. Playing antakshari!
It always began with “Baithe baithe bore hue karna hai kuch kaam!” and the game ended late at night, only when the power came back!
2. Gup-shup all night
Sitting out in the garden/balcony and having a heart-to-heart with your mom or dad or sis or bro was so cool! And you could tell each other all sorts of embarrassing secrets because you couldn’t see other’s faces and didn’t feel so shy.
3. Listening to the radio
Listening to the radio on our battery operated transistors was everyone’s favourite way to unwind and relax when engulfed in total darkness.
4. Playing cards/Uno
Under the light of a solo candle, the entire family would gather to play some Rummy or Teen Patti, while the kids did the same with Uno cards .
5. Hand shadows!
Making shadow animals and birds with our hands using a flashlight was AWESOME. And it was so much fun trying to get people to guess what creature it was supposed to be!
6. Dancing away to glory!
One could actually dance like nobody’s watching – because who can see you in the dark?
7. Scary stories
What was a dark night without the narration of some gory, scary and downright spine-chilling tales?
8. Playing Hide and Seek and Dark Room!
No-bijli situations were perfect to play games such as these.
9. Word games!
Dumb Charades by the light of a lantern, or word games like Atlas, Word Association, and the best of the lot – Name, Place, Animal, Thing!
10. Star-gazing
Setting up mattresses out in the open, sprinkling them with cold water and sleeping under the stars on nights it was too hot to sleep inside was awesome!
