Ness Wadia, actress Preity Zinta’s ex-boyfriend and the heir of the Wadia Group, has been sentenced to a two-year prison term in Japan for possessing drugs while on a skiing holiday.
Reportedly, Ness was found in possession of 25 grams of cannabis resin. The business tycoon was detained at New Chitose Airport in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido in early March. He spent an undisclosed period of detention before a court hearing. And now, the Sapporo District Court has sentenced him two-year jail time.
The owner of the Kings XI Punjab cricket team admitted to the possession of drugs saying that it was for his personal use.
Wadia Group told CNBC TV-18 that it is a suspended sentence and the judgement will not impact Ness Wadia in the discharge of any of his responsibilities. “Ness Wadia will continue to play the role that he has done hitherto, both within the Group and outside,” said the group in a statement.
The Wadia group are leading players in many industries. They own Bombay Dyeing, Bombay Burman Trading, biscuit giant Britannia Industries, airlines GoAir. Their total market valuation of the aforementioned entities standing at $13.1 billion.
The last time Ness was in the news for something this serious was back in 2014. His former flame Preity Zinta filed a complaint against him accusing him of molestation, threats and abuse.
The actress, who is a co-owner of their IPL team, said, “During that time he tried to abuse me and used extremely derogatory language and tried to behave in a manner where I was put to shame in front of my colleagues, friends and family.” Zinta stated that she had ‘orally’ warned him several times but had been repeatedly been embarrassed by his continuing behaviour towards her, especially in public. She said, “Ness Wadia has gone to the extent of threatening me with dire consequences and intimidating me by boasting of his political clout and connections.”
She further added, “Mr Ness Wadia had intimidated me by saying that he could make me disappear as I was a nobody and only an actress and he’s a powerful person. I have been tried to be very normal and nice to him as I wanted peace in my life, but the recent afore-stated incident in Mumbai at the Wankhede stadium has left me shattered and fear for my life.” It looks like the business tycoon really does have a penchant for controversy.
