‘India’s Got Colour’ & It’s About Time We Embrace It! Let’s Join B-Town’s Call For Action

‘Looking for a tall, slim & fair girl for a well-settled boy”… Seems familiar? Well, we all have read such lines multiple times across various matrimonial platforms. While the society has been openly discriminating on the basis of skin colour, the need of the hour lies in doing away with the bias and pushing for colour neutrality. Actor Nandita Das’ latest campaign is a huge step in the same direction.

Nandita has released a new video called, India’s Got Colour, to raise awareness on skin tone discrimination in India. Nandita’s social campaign marks her association with Chennai-based NGO Women of Worth (WOW) that has completed 10 years. She shared the video on her Instagram and wrote, “India’s Got Colour. A fun music video that we made to celebrate the diversity of skin colour in India! After all, we are 1.3 billion people, and that many shades of skin tones! Watch the video on Youtube and Facebook”.

The campaign celebrates a decade of, Dark is Beautiful, in a rap & music video. The video intends to normalise inclusivity around different skin tones. It reflects the campaign against anti-colourism in India and discusses the dominance of societal prejudices over our thought process, actions and words. The clip also throws light on how the same stereotype exists in the film industry and is an honest review of how flawed the beauty standards in Bollywood are.

Apart from female celebrities, many male actors like Ali Fazal and Vikrant Massey also came to the fore to support the cause.

Nandita’s two-minute video was released on Wednesday night and it was co-produced by Mahesh Mathai and music is by Ankur Tewari. Who wouldn’t want to have a look at it?

This is not the first time that Nandita has made such a strong pitch for women. Over the years, the Manto director has been working as a guiding light for women who face societal taboo.
