Apart from so many designers making their digital debut (fashion-show wise) this year, what’s so special about the FDCI India Couture Week 2020? The fact that so many of them have decided to chisel out their individual strengths instead of desperately seeking inspiration in a pandemic world, ace-designer Manish-Malhotra surely being one of them.
That said, be it any season, stage, or fashion week, Malhotra easily happens to be the designer who makes the most headlines with practical designs that have a mass appeal. Something pretty similar happened last night immediately after his couture film ‘The Nazakat of Awadh and The Vibrance of Punjab’ went live.
Treading softly and getting ready along the length of this short film as Malhotra’s muse Janhvi Kapoor took over our mobile screens we pretty much lost ourselves in the larger than life flare of her trailing lehenga. “Can you hear the शहनाई playing or is it just me,” Janhvi captioned a picture in the dreamy attire and truth is that we totally could. There was just so much of bridal inspiration to be derived from Malhotra’s Ruhaaniyat collection and we have indeed curated a list of all our takeaways from it. Scroll down to know all about it:
Janhvi Kapoor’s Trailing Lehenga & Bottoms That’ll Put Even Cinderella To Shame
Poetry in motion! That’s exactly how we’d describe Janhvi Kapoor dressed in the trailing mint lehenga that will keep breaking the internet for days to come. Adorned in Malhotra’s signature floral zardozi, sequence motifs and alternating cutdana and sitaara trails, the lehenga exudes every bit of the designer’s trademark appeal and yet has a distinctive freshness about it.
Touted as a fine amalgamation of the ‘nazakat of Awadh and the vibrance of Punjab,’ the collection has inflections from both cultures, with Janhvi’s trailing lehenga becoming the culminating point of the aesthetic.
The regal delicacy of the pastel green is beautifully managed by the opulence of signature Manish Malhotra embroidery.
Rest assured, the trailing lehenga is definitely going to be the centre of attention of Indian wedding culture for seasons to come and given its regal appeal, we aren’t complaining at all. Here’s a lehenga that’ll put Cindrella to shame and we say ‘keep it coming!’
As promised in the collection brief, “Ruhaaniyat” is indeed inspired by the Mughal era of kalidaar kurtas, khada dupattas, angrakhas and ghararas. That said, the bottom wear game is absolutely on fire here and as much as that trailing lehenga, we also love this yellow gharara from the collection and think this would make the perfect mehendi outfit for the season’s brides.
Of Sheer Dupatta & Whimsical Borders
Malhotra has certainly applied the best of his artistic genius in the ultra-sheer, veil-like dupatta that hasn’t been touched with even a smudge of embroidery or glitter except for the heavy border. This really does bring the focus to the opulent details of her lehenga and choli as well as the jewellery and adds to the overall whimsy by covering it all with just a thin, transparent fabric. Here’s a dupatta that’s versatile, gorgeous, and every bit statement!
In fact, whimsical dupatta’s feature time and again in Ruhaaniyat. For this collection, the designer has opted for sheer fabrics like net and organza and left them clean while focussing just on the borders. This is indeed a neat trick to keep even the heaviest of the bridal outfits from looking overwhelmingly OTT. This pale pink dupatta and the unhinged embroidery are specifically catching our fancy.

Jewel Rule 101
For dupattas that sheer, one really needs to work up the jewel game and come up with statement pieces that help the gossamer dupatta fulfill its sartorial destiny. Janhvi’s bridal look strives for the same. She has been given OTT jewels in uncut diamonds and statement emeralds to match with the grandeur of her lehenga.
However, what we really love her is the over-sized maang teeka, a styling constant in the couture film that truly stands out for us. This jewel staple is going to take over the bridal seen so fast that you wouldn’t even realise it. Just wait and watch!
A Colour Palette Dipped In Sepia
Ruhaaniyat is a collection about our designing legacy with a lot of inflection from the regal collection of the yore, somewhat like Sephia pictures resurrected from the past. The colour palette beautifully gives out the same idea. Apart from the reigning mint, muted pinks, pale blues, and even greys are the central colours here with only an occasional burst of colours. This colour palette is what gives the otherwise heavily embroidered outfits their subtle royal touch and also stands out as the new element in Manish Malhotra aesthetics.
For today’s bride, red is kinda passe, pastel is the palette to go by, and grey not a colour to fear anymore. What’s not to love?
Janhvi’s Beauty Look
We are absolutely loving how Janhvi’s nude lips and heavily-kohled eyes come together to further accentuate that raw, powerful appeal of the designer’s costumes. By now we have seen a bevy of nude mounted brides to easily conclude that red has been duly replaced by this subtle hue so as to throw focus on the bride’s skin and the eyes. Pure love!
