Is Hair Slugging A ‘Gram-Approved Fad Now? We’ve Got The Deets

We’ve heard of slugging as a Korean-derived hack for the skin. If you’re not acquainted with the technique, it involves smearing dollops of a moisture-trapping occlusive on the face (like Vaseline), and leaving it on overnight to seal in moisture, and reinstate your face’s radiance.

But how do you slug your hair? Is that even a thing? According to the Internet, it is. But what does it involve? And how do you do it? Let’s find out.

Is Hair Slugging The Internet’s New Favorite Moisturising Hack?

What Is Hair Slugging?

Verdict? Yes. Searches for ‘hair slugging’ on Google have gone up by 270% in the past month. Everyone’s scrambling to put this hack to the test, but this moisture-inducing treatment is not the same as slugging the skin. It’s, honestly, nothing new or ground-breaking. It’s pretty simple. You coat your tresses with a hydrating treatment before wrapping them up and leave the product on overnight before washing it all off.

A lot of people are reinterpreting the trend, and wrapping their hack with a fluffy sock. Yup. I mean, sure, wrapping is an important element of the process. It locks in moisture and maximizes the absorption of the product. And the heat from your scalp activates the treatment, and, hence, enables more absorption too. But sock-wrapping is not necessary. Whether you choose to wrap your hair with a towel or sock, the results will remain the same.

How Do You Do It?

First, coat your hair with a hydrating treatment. Some prefer coating their entire head: scalp to ends. And others pay more attention to their mid-lengths as well as the ends. Remember not to compromise on the ends. They’re more susceptible to damage and breakage. Anyhow, it depends on you. If your scalp is oily, though, don’t apply too much product to the area. Next, wrap your hair in a cloth. You can use a silk-based one for this technique. And try adding a silk pillowcase to the equation too. The next day, rinse it off with shampoo to remove the product thoroughly.

Who Benefits From It?

This trend isn’t exclusive to a certain texture or type of hair; but if your strands are particularly dry, coarse, wavy, or dehydrated, you might benefit from slugging. Even those with chemically-treated hair, colour-treated hair, and heat-styled hair can opt for slugging. If your hair is oily, try a product that doesn’t contain too much oil. It can weigh your hair down, and stimulate excessive production of oil in the scalp. A serum or conditioning treatment work.

How Much Slugging Is Too Much Slugging?

According to experts, slugging once a week is enough. If you over-indulge, you might strip your hair of natural oils.

Guess ‘hair slugging’ is just a trendy nickname for a hydrating treatment, but we’re loving it anyway. We’re all so invested in skincare that we don’t quite focus on nourishing our tresses the way we should—so if a buzzy nickname is what it takes for us to indulge in a day of hair-care, we approve.
