Earlier this week,, the first episode of the series Ms Marvel dropped on Disney+ Hotstar and we can’t stop raving about it! After years of waiting, we finally have our very own desi superhero—Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City played by Iman Vellani. The 19-year-old actress is slaying it in the series and we are living for it. In fact, this is Iman’s first acting gig ever and we got all the deets about how she bagged it!
In a recent interview with a leading magazine, Iman opened up about the audition process and shared that her casting as Kamala Khan happened in the ‘brownest’ way possible. The actress shared, “This is the brownest way this could happen. In February 2020, I get this WhatsApp forward. I thought it was a scam. I don’t know what casting calls look like but they are not white pages that say, ‘Ms Marvel, Disney+ and headshot and resume here.'”
She added that the casting call turned out to be real and she sent in an academic resume and a photo and got a call back from them. However, the actress added that she was afraid of failing as the lead actress. Iman shared, “I was making excuses for myself out of fear of failure. And at, like, 3:00 a.m. the night it was due, I sent in my self-tape. I was like, my 10-year-old self is gonna hate me if I don’t even try. And two days later I get a call. They’re like, do you have a lawyer? We wanna fly you to LA and I was like, I have a math test, but okay. And next thing, I’m in LA with my dad.”
NGL, we are so glad Iman took a chance on herself! We can’t imagine anyone else playing the part of Marvel’s first Muslim superhero. Now, all we can do is wait for the remaining 5 episodes to drop.
