When A Telugu Girl Married A Belgian Boy… The Cutest Wedding!

This June 2016 wedding involved a Telugu bride, a Belgian groom and some elaborate and super fun ceremonies in Goa, all of which were captured by The Photo Diary. Deepika and Nicolas first met as colleagues at a time when Deepika was meeting guys in an arranged marriage scenario.

As the two became work friends, they realized how similar their thinking was and how well they got along, despite being from absolutely different backgrounds and cultures. It was at a particularly long (10 hours to be specific) Sunday lunch date when sparks flew and they decided they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.

The Haldi

A Telugu wedding – complete with haldi, mehendi and sangeet – was an alien concept to Nicolas and his family, but they played along beautifully. In fact, they even had some emotional moments during the ceremonies.

What a sport this groom is, isn’t he?

“Nicolas being Belgian and me being Indian, we knew from the beginning that we wanted the wedding to have a blend of both our roots and cultures. We wanted a continuous theme running through the functions and hence picked the design of a windmill next to a firki (pinwheel) which was consistent through all decorations and creatives. Windmill because Nicolas’ last name, Dumoulin, means man from the windmill, and firki because it’s an Indian pinwheel which has a wind element in it. Both together signify movement and colour – both of which we wanted our wedding to have,” shared the bride, Deepika.

The Mehendi

Deepika wore an Arpita Mehta ensemble for her mehendi and left her hair open with a gorgeous headgear made of golden chains and a cute centrepiece adding to the charm. Ooh, and we loved her mehendi design which had an Indian bride and a western groom! A windmill was made at the back of her hand, symbolizing the meaning of her groom’s surname.

The Wedding

The wedding ceremony saw Nicolas arrive on an elephant, sherwani and pagdi in place. The ceremony was done the traditional Telugu way. The bride wore a traditional kanjeevaram saree from Nalli.

The Sangeet/ Reception

Deepika, who wore an adorable Papa Don’t Preach lehenga for her sangeet, shared with us, “To blend in both cultures, we had a traditional Indian wedding and coupled it with a classic Western reception party.” This crazy evening saw their family and friends pull out all the stops and party till 6am! Deepika was touched by the speech Nicolas gave at their reception party. “He was visibly nervous and awkward about giving a public speech, but it was very endearing for me and our closest family and friends present in that room,” she said.
