From SRK To Preity Zinta, 7 Indian Actors Who Almost Went Bankrupt!

As glamorous as it sounds, being an actor comes with a lot of uncertainties. Nothing is permanent in showbiz. Your films might start flopping after a series of hits. You might even get replaced despite being good. And actors face these hurdles more often than you imagine. While some of the biggest stars have seen a lot of success, they have faced harsh times as well. In fact, some of them almost went bankrupt. Yes!

Here’s a list of seven celebs who faced a financial crisis and almost went bankrupt:

SRK

It is hard to believe that Shah Rukh Khan was almost on the verge of going bankrupt. It happened after his passion project Ra.One. The movie was produced by his wife Gauri and was made on a 150 crore budget. SRK even signed blank cheques as he was confident that the movie would be a big hit. However, things didn’t go as planned and Ra.One failed at the box offices. Thankfully, Don 2 and Jab Tak Hai Jaan performed well and pulled SRK out of the crisis.

Amitabh Bachchan

There was a time when Big B lost everything. In 1996, he started an entertainment company called Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) but suffered losses. He was declared bankrupt and his properties were mortgaged. Reportedly, Big B was in a debt of 90 crores and had no money or film. It was Yash Raj who saved him by giving him the iconic role in Mohabbatein. Later, Kon Banega Crorepati happened and he was touching the heights of success.

Jackie Shroff

Back in 2003, Jackie Shroff’s wife Ayesha Shroff produced Boom. The movie starred some of the biggest names in the industry but still failed badly at the box office. This resulted in Jackie and his family suffering a huge financial loss. So much so that he had to sell his house along with the furniture to recover.

Govinda

Despite making his mark in the industry, Govinda once failed to get work for at least 3-4 years. This even led to a huge financial loss and a public breakdown. It was after he starred in Partner, alongside Salman Khan, that he got back on track.

Raj Kapoor

Raj Kapoor’s passion project Mera Naam Joker took six years to make but landed him in huge financial trouble. Though the movie was a success in Russia, it failed to impress the critics and audience in India. In 2018, the late actor Rishi Kapoor revealed how the movie’s massive failure almost ruined their lives. He said, “When Mera Naam Joker was about to release, our studio and all our assets were mortgaged to release that film, and the picture bombed. We were in severe problems. Then he made a film called Bobby with a new boy and new girl, which was a huge risk after seeing the failure of Mera Naam Joker. But it became super hit and that is when his friends and my uncles insisted that he should buy a house.”
