Dolly Singh’s journey, from a writer/content creator to a Bollywood actress, has been remarkable but far from smooth sailing. She recently shared on Instagram that at 19, when she moved to Delhi, the world seemed daunting and she’d hide inside her flat and find solace in her soft toys. But the tables have turned now. She’s been unlocking new achievements and her journey is nothing short of awe-inspiring. A small-town girl making it big in the city, battling insecurities and haters, and coming out victorious. Maybe that’s why her post deeply resonated with me and thousands of others who see her journey as a personal triumph.
Dolly has always been vocal about her journey and the bullying that she faced in life. During an interview with Humans Of Bombay, she revealed that she has been skinny-shamed and bullied for crocked teeth. From being called ‘bag of bones’ to ‘kaali lakdi‘, and ‘sukhi dandi‘, she has heard it all. She even talked about a disheartening incident where her school teacher paraded her in front of everyone and called her ‘ugly’ just because she wore an outfit to a farewell party that didn’t match the dress code.
Fast forward to now, she has not only carved a niche for herself but has gone on to become one of the most celebrated influencers in India. Here, let’s look back at her journey and some of her accomplishments!
Moving To Delhi From Nainital
With her knack for fashion and a dream to become a stylist, Dolly moved to Delhi with big hopes in her eyes. She pursued a BA Honours course from DU and then went on to do a Fashion Management course from NIFT. But living in Delhi wasn’t that affordable and hence she took up part-time jobs like emceeing at malls and weddings. During this time, she even started her own blog, Spill the Sass. She then joined iDiva as a styling and writing intern, and as we know, the rest is history.
First Stint In Front Of The Camera
iDiva turned out to be the biggest turning point of her career. From writing scripts to getting featured in videos, Dolly did it all. She became an overnight sensation for her portrayal of a South Delhi aunty and for playing a fictional character – Raju ki mummy.
Starting Her Solo Journey
After parting ways with iDiva in 2017, Dolly went on to establish her own identity as a funny and relatable content creator on Instagram. Her videos kept us all hooked and entertained. She now has a massive following that is 1.6M strong!
Acting Projects
Eventually, her hard work paid off and she got to make her debut as Kapi in Netflix’s Bhaag Beanie Bhaag in which she acted alongside Swara Bhaskar. She then starred in the Modern Love: Mumbai series where she played Masaba Gupta’s friend, followed by Feels Like Home and Double XL. Recently, she achieved another acting milestone with Rhea Kapoor’s movie Thank You For Coming. She even made quite a fashion statement during the movie promotions at TIFF.
Featured In An Ad For Colgate
I am sure this one is like a tight slap on the faces of all those people who ridiculed Dolly for her teeth. In 2022, the influencer got featured in Colgate’s ‘Smile Out Loud’ campaign. As expected, she nailed it!
Bought Her Parents A New Home
In 2021, Dolly achieved another milestone when she finally fulfilled her lifelong dream of gifting her parents a new house. She hosted a pooja for the same and even gave a house tour in one of her vlogs. Beti ho toh aisi!
Walking The Cannes Red Carpet
Dolly took her first international step when she made her Cannes Film Festival Debut in May 2023. From her outfit choices to her confidence, everything exuded a ‘self-made woman’ and I am all for it!
Dolly’s journey is an inspiration for those who are on the verge of giving up on themselves. It’s remarkable how she always believed in herself and never let others pull her down.
