Delhi is known for its wild party scenes and a lot of alcohol consumption. But, a recent survey revealed that it is also a major consumer of weed. In fact, Delhi is the third-largest consumer of cannabis in the world.
Shocking?
The study conducted by ABCD, a Germany-based data firm reveals that in the year 2018 Delhi consumed 38.26 metric tonnes or 38,260 kgs. While Delhi features on top in this list of 120 cities, the maximum city isn’t far behind. Mumbai also made it to the top ten, ranking sixth, with an average of 32.38 tonnes or 32,300 kgs of weed consumption.
Well, the reason behind this consumption could be the affordable prices of cannabis in India. The survey further revealed that Delhi is also in the top 10 cities of the world that supply weed at the cheapest possible price, putting the cost at just Rs 315 per gram and Rs 329 per gram in Mumbai.
There was a time when cannabis was easily available in India. In the 1980s, the government banned it under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
While the consumption of weed remains illegal in our country, not many know that India allows the cultivation of cannabis for industrial purposes. However, consumption of cannabis in India can land you in prison for six months or a heavy fine of Rs 10,000. The illegal production of the crop can lead to a jail term of 10 years.
Well, Delhi features on the third spot but it’s New York where people love to ‘roll’ the most. New York is on top with 77.4 tons consumption, followed by Karachi (Pakistan), which consumed 42 tons of weed in 2018. Los Angeles is on the fourth spot with 36 tons of consumption and Chicago on eighth with 24.5 tons.
The other cities that feature in the list are Cairo (fifth spot with 32.2 tons), London (seventh with 31.4 tons), Moscow (ninth with 22.9 tons) and Toronto (tenth with 22.7 tons).
The German company, ABCD, releases the Cannabis Price Index to push for the cause and their numbers are based on the percentage of the population, having used weed in the year estimated by the UN Office of Drugs and Crime.
Ever wondered what will happen if this drug is legalised and taxed? The study calculated that Delhi could raise Rs 225 crores and Mumbai would raise Rs 199 crores.
