Delhi And Mumbai In The Bottom 15 Of World’s Safe Cities Index 2019

Every time you open Instagram, at least 10 of your friends seem to be travelling to fun, exciting locations, which in turn makes you want to travel to even more fun and exciting locations. But how do you choose these destinations? How important is safety and security to you when you’re planning your itinerary? Probably a top priority, right?

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Safe Cities Index (SCI) has ranked 60 cities across the world on the basis of their digital security, health security, infrastructure, and personal safety.

On top of that list is Tokyo, followed by Singapore. Five other Asia-Pacific cities also made it to the top 10 – Osaka (third), Sydney (fifth), Seoul (tied eighth), and Melbourne (tenth). Europe’s Amsterdam is fourth while Copenhagen is tied eighth. From America, Toronto is sixth and Washington, DC, seventh.

But the upsetting part is that only two cities from India made it to this list, and even they placed in the last 15. Mumbai stood 45th while New Delhi 52nd. While worrisome and concerning, this is not exactly a surprise, as India has been struggling with law and order, and crime against women has been a consistent concern for the government and all of us.

The report also suggests that with issues such as terrorism and climate change being some of our primary worries right now, the rankings take into account urban management and the resilience of a city after a natural or man-made disaster. The report said, “A key element of this will be the ability of cities to provide security for their residents, businesses and visitors.” And even though not all rich cities are automatically ranked safe, the report points out that cities in developing countries tend to rank lower in the list.

In the bottom five of the list are Caracas in Venezuela, Yangon in Myanmar, Karachi in Pakistan, and Dhaka in Bangladesh. At number 60, the lowest-ranked city is Lagos in Nigeria.
