Greetings Upper East Siders! Rumour has it that Golden Boy and Lonely Boy recently took a trip down memory lane together, and we have all the juicy details. Former Gossip Girl co-stars Chace Crawford and Penn Badgely, who played Nate Archibald and Dan Humphrey respectively, held a virtual reunion via video chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. They discussed everything under the sun from their time together on set, their feelings on the show now, and what they expect from the new Gossip Girl reboot.
You know the feeling when you look back at old pictures of you as a teenager…and cringe a little? Well, Chase and Penn had some similar feelings because they were both in their early twenties when they started working on the show. And because of that, they also admitted to not having seen the show in quite a while. “Buddy, you have to strap me to a gurney and pop my eyes open like Clockwork Orange,” said Chase. Wow, that was a dark joke.
However, Penn also admitted that the last time he saw the show was a few months after he met his now-wife Domino Kirke (they’ve been married for over three years now), and said it was “very hard to watch.” “These snapshots of yourself when you’re 20, 21, 22 years old. Who can enjoy that? Sometimes it’s just uncomfortable,” he added.
Can you imagine two beautiful beings like Penn and Chase being ’embarrassed’ about the way they looked when they were younger? Celebs, they’re just like us after all.

Despite their embarrassment about their awkward post-teen phase, Chase did admit that “some of the most fun moments” on the Gossip Girl set were in the scenes he shared with Penn. Penn also agreed that the scenes he shared with Chase were ‘remarkable’. Awww, looks like D and N’s bromance is still going strong!
In fact, they even agreed to watch the show together again. “We’re doing that when you come to L.A. We’ll have a drink,” Chase suggested. Of course, Penn was on board, just like Dan agreed with most of Nate’s ideas. “A little watching party. Dude, if we live-tweet a viewing of any episode of Gossip Girl, people would love that,” said Penn. Ummm, YOU READ OUR MINDS, PENN!
The two also discussed how Gossip Girl was a product of its time, and maybe the show wouldn’t have been popular in 2020. “People wanted to watch a show like Gossip Girl because it was aspirational. It was like an escape. It seemed like it struck a certain cultural chord because it was this aspirational fantastical vision of excess wealth,” said Penn.

“But now, cut to 13 years later, people are not interested in that. And I think rightfully so. Now they’re interested in deconstructing why we’re so fascinated with that in the first place. We’re interested in deconstructing those systems of privilege,” he added.
Well said, Penn! The creators of the reboot already revealed that the next era of Gossip Girl is going to be very different from the original and have a better representation of queer stories and non-white characters.
Gossip Girl being woke? Well, we can’t wait to see what that looks like! Do you have mixed feelings about the reboot or are you excited to get a peek into the lives of Manhattan’s elite once again?
